When booting up WinXp, sometimes a blue screen appears right before the
log-in screen that says, "Windows has been prevented from starting due to an
error. " some of the other things on said screen are
"PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA", and error stop codes that involve 0xc0000005,
0xc9464269, and ox866e208c. I've attempted system restore, but can't get
back to a pt before the problem. I've also tried PC restore, but can't get
to the Dell splash screen because of the damn blue one. This is an
intermittent problem; sometimes it takes 7 tries to get on, others it boots
right up. answers?

Check your Ram. You can use Memtest a free program. If you have more
than one module and it's not in a dual channel config you can swap out each
one at a time.

Run a test of your RAM with memtest86+ (I know it is boring and will
cost you a CD).

The memtest will not run under Windows, so you will need to download
the ISO file and create a bootable CD, boot on that and then run the
memtest86+ program.

If a single error is reported it is a failure and that should make you
suspicious of your RAM.

The file and instructions are here:

http://www.memtest.org/

If someone says to run memtest86, you can say that you know memtest86+
supercedes memtest86 and here's why:

A possible memory problem. Check out this URL.

When the error occurs in normal mode does it occur during the boot
process or later?

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms793437.aspx

0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was
referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video
RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus
software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems
(e.g., incorrect SCSI termination or a flawed PCI card).

you might be able to
boot up with a xp cd.

if so, then you likely
have the opportunity
to fix the issue via the
recovery console.
