Can you track what's stalling XP startup?

Just had to format my computer because Logitech Setpoint's update made
it impossible to boot even to safe mode. (Shipping the
diNovo-piece-of-s*** back today, bought a Saitek yesterday). Anyways,
after installing some programs, the startup started stalling. If you
count how many times the blue dots cycle before the log-on screen, it
is usually around 6-8 for meg. Suddenly they cycled 40 times before
log-on. Is there any way to track what makes the computer linger? Any
software that logs all processes and shows how long time it spends on
each, for instance? I have run Ccleaner and a registry clean-up.

Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't use registry cleaners, because XP doesn't need them. Start >
Run and type in

msconfig

go to Startup tab and see what is loading at startup.

I know what's starting already and none of it should lead to such a
delay, but I have a hunch the registry is looking for something that
isn't there. I want to know where the startup spends time. Hopefully
there is some software that can show this.

Thanks again.

Try pressing F8 during initial startup and choose to Create Log
File. The log file will show you a listing (in text) of the
startup process and successes/failures.

But there will be no time information associated with these log
information so you can't determine how long each logged event required
to complete.
