startup abort to dos PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

David

I had a power outage recently. When I got power back and
turned on my computer, it starts to load the Windows 2000
system (I see the logo page and the loading slidebar
indicator in action), but about 2/3 into loading it aborts
to a STOP SCREEN with a inaccessible_boot_device error
message, with additional instructions to run virus and
CHKDISK programs. But I can't ever get the start up
sequence to abort the attempted W2K load and let me into
DOS.... I have tried both F5 and F8 but they both take
me to the Windows options menu, and NONE of the options
take me to DOS. (i remember in old Win98 that F5 usually
went to DOS and F8 went to options menu, but with W2K it
seems that they take me to the same place ... the options
menu)

How do I abort the W2K startup and get down to DOS so that
I can run the CHKDSK and try to repair my system? My life
is on this computer.... and I need to access it ASAP!!!
PLEASE HELP!!!

There is no DOS.

Boot your Windows 2000 CD-ROM and start the Recovery Console.

Without a CD-ROM and without access to the Recovery Console or an alternate install, you are dead in the water.

If your life is worth something, I'd get professional help.

I've a xp home pc from a friend here with similar problems. The hard
disk has a whole bunch of defective areas.

What I'm about to do now, is to save all readable content to a second hd.
(Booting the pc with a knoppix/linux cd and raw copying with dd_rescue)

That cd from (www.knoppix.com) allows also mounting the hd and a remote
share of a windows pc and copying over the lan.

This can be alternatively done with windows-pe or a pebuilder-cd staying
in the windows world.

But these tasks require detailed knowledge and thus require a pro.
