start-up - how do I stop a program from loading?

*** Question - how do I configure msn messenger to ONLY load when I
start up my ISP's software to log on to the Internet, & not when I
start my computer? I use Windows XP. (or for that matter - how do i
stop any program from loading upon start-up of my computer?)

Explaination:
I am new to msn messenger. I just got a webcam to communicate with a
friend of mine (logitech Pro 4000). I have not used msn messenger yet
to communicate with anyone, but all settings & everything seem to be
ok, & my webcan is working.

Small problem: I have a dial up account. I usually turn my computer
on & off a couple a day. Also even if I leave my computer on, I log
off of the Internet several times a day to use the computer offline.

Each time I either turn my computer on, or log off of my ISP (computer
stuff reloads after I log off) & re-initiate my Windows account), msn
messenger always starts up & wants me to sign in. Well, I can't sign
in at that point even if I wanted to, because I am not online yet. So
I have to click off msn messenger (it shrinks to a small icon, still
working I guess), then log on, then it loads up again & invites me to
sign in.

** Also - how do I configure msn messenger to NOT open an addtional
window to the "MSN Today" site whenever I start up my ISP's software?

Thanks for any help.

Configure Messenger not to start when starting windows via messenger
options, configure IE, OE and Outlook not to use messenger also.

In the MSN Messenger main window, go to tools, then options, then go to the general tab, and click off all the things you don't want, i.e. "Automatically run Messenger when I log into windows"

on msn messenger:
tools > option > general tab > uncheck automatically run messenger when i
log on to windows.

this will prevent msn messenger to start. which also means, you need to look
it up your start menu when you need to use msn messenger.

however, you might like this option also:
check automaticallu run messenger when...
uncheck open messenher main window...
uncheck allow automatic sign in when connected...
uncheck display msn today when messenger...

these options will start msn messenger when you turn on your computer but
would not as you to connect to the internet, and would not sign in either.
when you connect to the internet, you would need to manually sign in
yourself.

and yes, i do use dialup as well which makes our case almost the same. LOL!

have you tried going into your preferances in the messanger? if not try that and selecting not to start up when windows starts up. you can also go to run on your start bar, type in msconfig, a box will appear. select startup. then deselect the messenger. hit apply. close. a box will come up asking if you want to restart but you don't have to. next time your puter starts the messanger will not and a box will come up telling you you are using selective start up. this means nothing and just click don't show this again ok.
