Start Menu programs

Howard Brazee

I'd like to modify my start menu. What I see is:

Some of the programs I have recently run are at the bottom left of this
menu. I have no idea what rules determine which programs get there,
and which programs don't.

I can drag one of these programs above the line so it stays all the
time. This is where my browser and e-mail program can be checked to
appear when I modify properties.

How do I:

Get a program that doesn't currently appear on these lists after I run
them to appear (or not to appear)?

Move a folder that I use a lot to this menu?

My suggestion is to turn off Personalized Menus. R-click the Start
button and Properties, Customize, Scroll to the bottom.

You can drag any program/folder to the start menu.

How? I have the Windows XP menu (not the classic), and I'd like to
drag a shortcut of a folder to the start menu.

I opened my Start menu and went to drag a the folder, when I clicked on
that folder, my start menu disappeared. I draged it to the start
button and waited a bit, and then my Start menu appeared again. I
tried to drag it to where I wanted it, but the only place I could seem
to drop it is within another folder being displayed.

What am I missing?

I'm not finding this option. How does turning off Personalized Menus
enable me to copy a folder to my START menu?

Let's you see what is there instead of hiding some of it. Also put a
check in the box for "Enable drag and drop".

You my manage start menu items like files.

In multiuser operating systems, such as Windows XP, shortcuts and
folders from the Start menu are stored in the following folders -
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
For all users
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Start Menu
For the user John

To access these shortcuts and folders, just right-click the Start
button and select "Explore"

"Enable drag and drop" is checked. I have no idea whether
Personalized Menus is turned off or not - I still can't find it.

That works fine with "classic start menu". I'm used to doing that to
have a shortcut to a folder I want with on the Start Menu in "classic
view". Switching to the classic start menu verifies it still works.
I can't pin a shortcut to a folder (and locations should be on the
right side of the XP start menu anyway).

That "check box" only appears in the "Classic View". As for "Copying a
folder to the start menu" Why would you do that?!? Shortcut to a folder,
yes. Make a shortcut to the folder on the Desktop, Drag and hold it over
the start button, when the Start menu opens Drop the shortcut in the
"pinned area".

Classic view I understand. I can copy folder shortcuts there.

That's what I meant.
Make a shortcut to the folder on the Desktop, Drag and hold it over
the start button, when the Start menu opens Drop the shortcut in the
"pinned area".

I tried that before I started this thread. Can you get it to work?

Can you get it to work?

Yes, literally drag it.

Other than that, there is an edit to block adding.....have you been
tweaking?

Yes, that is exactly what I did. I Changed the Start menu to NON
Classic(reminded me how much I dislike it) and then made a shortcut to
the folder on the Desktop, Drag and held it over the Start button, when
the Start menu opened I droped the shortcut in the "pinned area" and
there it stayed. Single click the shortcut to open the folder.

I wish I could do that. I do have Enable Dragging and Dropping
checked, and don't see any other setting that looks suspicious. But
I am unable to drop a folder shortcut to my menu.

It's gotta be in the "pinned area" tho. You can't just plop it down
anywhere.

I can drag a program shortcut to the "pinned area" with no problem. I
can't find a place that accepts a folder shortcut.

Dunno, I just made a shortcut on the Desktop and Drag and dropped. It
"flashs a bar" in between the current "pinned" items and you just
release, and there it is.

Interesting - I just tried it at home and it works.

But at work, it works for programs, which go to the area I can pin them to
using the menu. It doesn't work for folders which I also can't pin using
the menu.

I have no idea what's different.

It works at home, not at work. I'm not finding the difference.
