Number of programs on Start menu
[[Specifies the maximum number of programs to display in the most frequently
used programs list on the Start menu. You can increase or decrease the
number.]]
[[Tip: Windows XP can only display up to eight most-often-used programs on
the left side of the new Start menu. If you'd like to see more at a time (up
to 14), decrease the size of the icons displayed there. Right click the
Start button (or a blank area of the Start menu) and select Properties. On
the Start Menu tab, click the Customize button next to Start Menu. On the
General tab, select Small icons, then click OK twice. ]]

there is not enough room to show all items
All I can find are these, Jack...
[[Your screen resolution is too low, or you have pined too many icons to
your start menu.
To change your screen resolution to higher, right-click your desktop,
click properties, click the settings tab, and then in the slider try
increasing your screen resolutions. ]]

[[Start menu
Q. Lorraine asks: When I start my computer l get a note saying "Some items
cannot be shown. There is not enough room to show all items you have added
to the start menu. Please choose smaller icons or choose a smaller number of
icons or unpin some icons. ". I right clicked on a blank part of the
toolbar, then selected 'properties'> 'StartMenu'> 'Customize'> 'Small
Icons'. Instead of getting the same number of icons, only smaller, what
happened was that the icons became smaller, but additional icons were added
from the desktop. The result is that the same amount of space is used, and I
still get the message about "...not enough room etc." I do not want to lose
any of the items in the start menu. I really just want to get rid of the
message, and perhaps make more room. I am using Windows XP. Hope you can
help.
A. Never seen this one before - all I can suggest is that you delete as many
desktop shortcuts as possible (this will not delete the actual applications
or access to the functionality of the programs) - but it may fix the
problem.
Lorraine responds. As l didn't have any shortcuts to delete I contacted
Microsoft. They suggested that I alter my screen resolution from 800x600 to
1024x768. They explained how to do this, and it worked. I no longer have
that annoying message. ]]

Thank you very much, Wesley.
What lead to my question was that each time I boot and try to use the
Start Menu to launch a program, I get a balloon message saying there
isn't enough room to show all items.
My Icons are small, my number of programs on the start menu in Customize
is 20 and my desktop resolution is 1024 x 768. The number of entries
appearing on the Start Menu is 15. Actually there are 13 programs and 2
folders.
There are no entries in the MRU and there is lots of blank space below the
last 'pinned' entry.
Have you any suggestions how to go about correcting this quirk?
Thanks again.

Called the Pinned items list.
From XP HELP...
[[You can change the order of the programs on the pinned items list by
dragging a program to a new position. ]]
[[The list of programs on the Start menu is divided into two parts: the
programs displayed above the separator line (also known as the pinned
items
list) and the programs displayed below the separator line (also known as
the
most frequently used programs list). The programs on the pinned items
list remain there and are always available for you to click to start
them. ]]
[[Pinned list:
The pinned list allows users to place shortcuts to programs and other
items
in the Start menu. It will be pre-populated with the user's default Web
browser and e-mail program (these can be removed).
A program (.exe file) or a shortcut to a program can be "pinned" to the
Start menu by right-clicking the item and clicking Pin to Start Menu. Any
other item can be added to the pinned list by dragging and dropping it to
the Start button or the Start menu. An item can be removed from this list
by
right-clicking it and clicking Unpin from Start Menu or Remove from This
List. The order of the items in this list can be arranged by dragging and
dropping them to the preferred position.
NOTE: If the program or shortcut that was pinned to the Start menu is
moved
or deleted, the link to it on the Start menu will no longer work. ]]

It has been a long time since I modified my Start Menu and it doesn't
behave the way I remember it when dragging a folder from My Computer to
it. It seems I remember that if I chose to drag a folder buried in My
Computer to the Start Menu, it would appear, in the left panel, below
the bold face programs that were pinned to the menu and be in 'normal'
type.
Now such folders appear amongst the bold face ones.
Is my memory failing as I have found in many other cases. Maybe I don't
understand what the 'normal' type entries are for in the Start Menu left
panel.
I appreciate any help anyone can give here.
Thank you.
P. S. I am running XP Home SP2. The last time I modified the menu
could well have been prior to any SP's.
