Standby problem

I just installed windows xp home edition on my laptop. I used to be able to
choose between standby, close and restart when I press the start-putton, but
now the start-button is not active.
I have tried to change the power management scheme, but standby doesn't seem
to be an option at all.
I hope that someone can help me with this problem. And sorry for my poor
English, am from Denmark, Europe...

Depending on the age of the laptop, you may have an issue with the
ACPI compliancy of the BIOS. At XP install time, it (XP) determines
from BIOS which HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) to employ.
That decision will greatly affect how Power Management operates. On
older notebooks it is sometimes necessary to update the Firmware of
the BIOS to allow full ACPI compliance. You should check Device
Manager and expand the Computer category. The indented entry will
describe which computer driver is used (HAL).
Also to help define the System components it's always a good idea to
install the motherboard Chipset Driver package immediately after a
install of XP.
Might help if you posted the Vendor/Model-# of the notebook, so
someone with a similar model might be able to post more specific advice.
