Standby Unavailable

I normally put my computer in Standby mode after pressing Start, then
followed by Turn Off Computer. I then get three choices to STANDBY, TURN OFF
or RESTART but, Stanby icon can still be seen but is no longer highlighted so
I can no longer use Standby. This occured after I was altering the power
scheme in the power option properties. A fatal error occured and the computer
crashed. I use windows XP home edition with service pack 2. I cannot see any
problems in device manager. I would be grateful if anyone could tell me how
to restore the standby icon to its full use. Many thanks in advance.

Mary, first try using sytem restore to restore to a date before the
crash. Go to Start | Run. Type in msconfig. Click ok. When it opens
click on the Launch System Restore button. Choose restore my computer
to an earlier time, and pick a date before the crash.

If that doesn't work do a repair install of the operating system. You
will need to have an installation CD, not a recovery CD, for this. See
these instructions:

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Note with the repair install, you will need to reinstall all updates
from the windows update site. The reinstall returns the operating
system to it's state according to the service pack level of the
installation CD.

Thank you for you reply but unfortunatly this has been an ongoing problem for
quite a while now for which I have not found an answer. If I had of used
system restore at the time for the crash all would probably now be ok. It has
been that long now that system restore is not an option.
Thanks Mary

Mary, this may be too simpleminded to work, but have you tried selecting a
different Power Management Scheme, such as "Minimal Power Management" to see
if that might permit Standby? Perhaps just one scheme is corrupted.

Thanks for the suggestion, went ahead and tried all other available schemes
but sadly with no joy.

You're welcome. Good luck and post back with the results if you can.

You may have done this, but get into your BIOS and restore factory defaults.
The crash might have corrupted the writable part of the BIOS.

You are in Safe Mode. restart the computer, when it first starts up hit f8
continuously until the computer goes into Safe mode, tell the computer to
get out of safe mode and go to xp the computer will shut down and go
directly to xp regular mode and u will have standby again

if u have a LAN hookup to ur computer, standby mode will continue to shutoff
after a few seconds. to help this problem go to start, control panel,
system, and then into device manager. Right click on network settings, u
will see two settings, remove the check mark in the one that says let the
computer get out of standby, or some other words that say that. Restart your
computer and the standby mode will work again, until u move the mouse or hit
a key on ur keyboard.
