Standby/Hibernate gone?

A friend of mine just recently wiped my hardrive clean for me after I got a
nasty virus. He put XP back onto it, and everything's working wonderfully,
except now, I can't put the thing into hibernation or even standby. The
button is frozen over on the shutdown menu.

I've tried various avenues to attempt to resolve the problem, but to no avail.

Any ideas or fixes?
