Standby broken

I have been running Windows XP on my computer for nearly a
year. All this time, it has worked fine. Last night, I
installed Kerio Personal Firewall and AntiVir Personal
Antivirus Scanner. After going through what appeared to
be a typical configuration sequence for both programs, I
left the computer to its own devices.

This morning, it was hung. The only way I could get its
attention was to cycle the power. After some
experimentation (i.e., repeating this process several
times), I determined that I could no longer use the
computer's standby (hibernate, whatever) mode.

I uninstalled AntiVir, and deleted the Kerio folder (there
was no uninstall option for it). This did not change
anything. Immediately before this procedure, standby
worked. Now, it doesn't.

I downloaded both programs directly from the company
websites.

Any hints on where I can look will be greatly appreciated.

I worked part of this out on my own; going into "Add or Remove Programs"
allowed me to correctly remove Kerio, after which standby mode worked again.

This, however, doesn't answer the question of how I screwed it up in the
first place...
