stalled at registering components

while setting up windows xp on a computer that had
previously run on windows 98, setup stalled @13 min. The
bottom of the screen says registering components. How do
i fix this so that i can get windows all set up?

That "registering components" thing can take a lot of time, maybe almost a hour.

can't help you but that's exactly my problem. Always in

registering components and everything freezes. No error
message just locks up.

Hi this is Lil. Mine stops at same function, but waiting
will not help as my computer completely freezes at that
point. I can't even use start menu to shut down, I have
to turn it off at the on /off switch.

Please any advice, thanks.
