A friend of mine appears to having some real problems with what appears to be
spyware. What is happening is we dial in because he has dial up access. Then
he normally clicks on the Internet Explorer Icon once he is connected and his
home page comes up. But now he can't get his home page or any web page at
all. THe only thing he can bring up is a search engine home page that
appears to be a host for the spyware or something. He recieves message
window that say spyware has been detected on this system please click here to
fix the problem. Which I know can often be the spyware company trying to
weasle you into buying something, but I can't get around it, I can't access a
free spyware scan or any sort because I am not able to contact any websites
at all. Whatever is on there is bogging down the entire system, however,
when I hit ctrl, alt, delete it shows no programs running and when I dealt
with spyware before I was able to see that something unfamiliar was running
and in this case it shows nothing. Is there anything we can do or is it to
the point of needing to be repair by a professional

Sounds like what is considered the "host file" has been changed. The
host file contains information that can cause internet explorer Re
directs to certain websites. What you may want to do is search for
files or files using the built in search utility in windows, and
searching for a file named and containing the words "hosts".
once you find this file, it will have a list of IP numbers along with
websites next to them. if you open it up with notepad and you find that
there are odd IP's along with some strange looking website names,
delete them out of the hosts file alltogether.
You may also want to check the IP and DNS settings of the computer,
incase those may have been changed. Once you get access to other sites,
try and download adaware and run that or if the machine is using
Windows2000 or above, try microsofts antispyware beta software:

Double check the "add/remove programs" in the control panel too. you
may find spyware that shows up as a installed program there. If that is
the case, use the add/remove button to remove that portion of spyware
as well.
