spoolsv error message

I have a computer in my office that is running Windows
2000 Pro SP4. On Friday, it started showing the following
error message when a printer is accessed:

"Spoolsv.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
windows. You will need to restart the program. An error
log is being created."

At this point, all of the printers disappear from the
printers folder. Upon re-boot, the printers return, but
then so does the same error message and they disappear
again.

I talked with Microsoft, and they sent a patch.
Unfortunately, the patch was older than my OS, so that
didn't help me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you.

I have the same problem!!!
Anyone pls help!!

I tried to copy the file (spoolsv.exe and spoolss.dll)
from another computer using the same OS and overwrite the
files but didn't work. The message stop appearing but the
printer still gone, and when I tried to get into the
server properties it sends me an error message "Server
properties cannot be viewed. The print subsystem is
unavailable"

I've already tried to download every critical update that
are available in the windows update site. Still won't work.

Thanks in advance
Hector

At present, this problem seems to be resolved. Signed as
as administrator, I had to go in and keep restarting the
print spooler under services and then remove each printer
before it errored again. After removing, I did a complete
shut down then re-installed the default printer.
Currently, the pc is printing without errors. p.s. in my
conversation with Microsoft, I was told this wouldn't fix
the problem as it was an internal print spooler problem,
not associated with a printer. Good Luck!!

Running Win2K Pro SP4. Recent new behavior, noticed after
installing Visual C .Net. All printers (local+network)
vanish during session; no identifiable operation causing.
All configs return after reboot. Most interestingly,
error produced at print attempt, yet print job will then
succeed _very_ early in the boot routine. Need fix,
repetitive reboots killing productivity.

what print drivers are installed? Most spooler failures are due to
faulting or corrupted drivers. Which printer are you sending a job to when
the spooler fails.

you can restart the spooler rather than reboot.

net start spooler

clean up the printers and drivers.

The drivers installed are for a HP Laserjet 1000. Used to
work just fine, but when started to show that error I
reboot the pc and then the error show up after restart, I
didn't have to print something for the message to show up.

I tried restarting the spooler manually with "net start
spooler" and it did, but when I browse my printers it
shows another error:
"The procedure entry point CacheAddName could not be
located in the dynamic link library SPOOLSS.DLL"

This might be because I installed the SP4 to try to fix
this but since didn't worked I copied the SPOOLSS.DLL and
SPOOLSV.EXE from another pc running W2K. How do I
rollback?? Should I have to reinstall Windows???

Thanks
HH

You will need the corresponding localspl.dll as well as spoolss.dll

When the spooler fails on startup, check the system eventlog for print error
45 or 61. Looking in \windows\system32\spool\printers for shd an spl
files. If you find these files move them to another location and then start
the print spooler service. If the spooler starts up after moving the files.
use notepad to look at the shd files. The driver and printer and document
name can be found in these file types.
