speakers vs Headphones

For some reason I have to enable the digital CD audio box in hardware properties to hear sound through the speakers and uncheck the box to listen to sound through the headphones from the CD ROM unit. Can anyone tell me why I can't simply plug in my headphones to the CD unit with out having to uncheck or check this box for digital CD audio?

That is the normal operation. By default, XP sets up your music CD
capabilities to use the IDE interface instead of the analog connection from
the drive to the sound card. When in this mode, there will be no output from
the CD drive headphone jack. If you wish to use the CD jack you will have to
uncheck digital, as you have been doing, and you can still set up your drive
to use the 4 pin analog hookup from the drive to the sound card and use the
CD Audio control in the mixer for your CD volume as opposed to the Wave
volume control as you do now.
