Separate volume control for headphones vs PC speakers?

I would like to listen to my CDs played on my IBM PC with
Windows Media Player on Windows XP, but I would like to
hear through my headphones and not through the PC speakers
so as not to disturb my neighbors. I plugged in the
headphones, but the speakers still let out sound as well
as the headphones. If I mute the system sound, the
headphones are muted as well. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I am plugging into the headphone jack on the front of the
PC box just below the disk drive.

I have the same problem like Victoria with my laptop speakers, is their anyone out their to help? Thanks
