SP4 Looping Reboot

R

Richard

After installing the SP4 update, my PC rebooted, then
goes to the splash screen, shows the Windows 2000 server
page, then when the bar goes all the way across, it then
reboots. I cannot read the error code.
Will not boot in safe or last known good.
What I have done is taken the hard drive, put it in a USB
hard drive case, and I am able to view the hard drive on
a Windows XP system. How and what can I change in the
Windows 2000 server registry or anything to make that
disk bootable again? I looked at the event viewer and it
did not record the error because it reboots to early. Is
there any way to take this machine back to the condition
before the SP4 upgrade. I have also tried a repair with
the CD and that did not work either.

You can start Recovery Console and from a command prompt change to the;
%SystemRoot%\$NtServicePackuninstall$\spuninst
directory. Then issue the command;
batch SPuninst.bat

The next step is to start in 'Safe Mode' and uninstall the SP again from
Control Panel|Add/Remove to finish the uninstall.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer:
%systemroot% and %windir%

If I do not have the admin password, let me tell you what
I have done... I have taken the drive out of the unit. I
put the drive into a USB external case and I can see all
the data and files... is there any way I can run that
file batch SPuninst.bat from that drive while a USB drive
on my running XP system.
