SP3 aint installing - timeline is LONG!!!!!!!!

Hey all...
running XPPro/SP2 and went and got SP3. Tried to install yesterday, but it
seemed to "hang" when installing a .dll. Rebooted, had it "undo" all it's
work, then rebooted once more and again tried to install.

The installer ran all afternoon, evening, and this morning after 19 hours,
was still trying to install (again in the .dll area) - so again, I quit the
installer and ran thru the uninstall process back to SP2.

This is worrisome. Why so dang long? Anyone else got the same woes?

buzz on this is....?

You are installing an unsupported service pack - it is still beta.

No you didn't. SP3 doesn't exist yet. What you downloaded was an
unsupported test version of SP3. If you want to run the risks
associated with running a test version, that's your choice, but don't
be surprised when it doesn't work the way you expected it to.

Yeah but...beta releases like this we always test on non-production machines,
to get a "feel" for the lastest sp offerings. My point was not that the
install wasn't working...but that after 19 hours I would'a thought it should
have installed.

So your point is moot. What I'd like to know is - are others also facing the
same LENGTHY install period?

The point is not moot because you made no reference to it being a test
version nor did you make any mention of how you were installing it on
non-production machines. You are - to everyone here - just some person who
found Windows XP SP3 online and decided that since you had SP2 now - the
next logical progression is SP3 and not knowing what Beta or Pre-Release
means (nor bothering to find out nor reading all the warnings surround it
(if you found it legitimately) decided to install it on your home system.

It happens - more often than not. Without information to the contrary (like
you posting on the proper newsgroups for Windows XP SP3 issues) - it is
safer to come to that conclusion than any other. I don't read minds - even
if I did - I don't do it remotely for people whom I have little or not
information about. There was no amount of 'reading between the lines' that
would have lead anyone to the conclusion that you had any idea what you were
doing with SP3.

Beyond that - your question is simple (knowing now you are doing this on a
single test machine): No. Not everyone is having this trouble. Have yu
tried it on a frshly installed machine with SP2? Tried Virtual Machines?
Other machines in any way? Was this machine you updated *ready* for SP3?

First, thanks for the help. Next, sorry, but I couldn't find the SP3 forum
anywhere....but the link you sent is great! Next, you must be kidding, right?
Do some folks actually just find OS links and then install without any
sourcing of user comments/notes/install problems etc? While I suspect that
you're right, I shudder at that thought...but then maybe for a simple home
user that's the way things work.

So...I'll move this over to that techNet forum and ask there....thanks!
