SP3 Issues

Morning,

After applying SP3 to a fresh install of XP Pro SP2 Microsoft update no
longer worked correctly. The updates download and try to install but fail.
I found the problem discribed on a tech net forum. It existed in SP3 RC3.
Microsoft says they corrected the issue. i assure you they did not. The SP3
RC3 fix still works. Once you do the following all is well again. regsvr32
wups2.dll

This is no good.

Regards,
Scott

How did you apply SP3, through Windows Updates or with the .iso burned
to a CD?

Interesting... From what I read on the web this is the third version of SP3.
I'm not going to try it again until June... I don't remember there being a
SP issue in a long time. i hope this is not the beginning of a trend.

There is no 3rd version of SP3. RC3 (if you call that the 3rd) is the
3rd release of the BETA, but SP3 final that was supposed to be for the
public is the only release. SP3 #5511 was never changed after it was
released, just held up for a week. Updates to the program that it
screwed up were issued but SP3 final is SP3 final.

I did a reload and update using the standalone .exe SP3 file. No
update issues. Windows Defender downloads updates almost daily.

The issue is operating system files not defender or office. IE 7.0 and a
couple of updates would not run. Look it up at TechNet. Search on "Windows
Update fails after installing SP3 (regsvr32 wups2.dll)".

No problems here. Through WU site download.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye. I did IE7 after my SP3 so I
guess I made it through okay. Luck of the irish (i'm not but...).

There was an RC3?
RC1, yes.
RC2, yes.
RC2 Refresh, yes.
I recall no RC3.

It is unlikely SP3 will go through any further changes. It has been
released - that's pretty much it.

I have not seen this issue on any of the couple of hundred machines I
installed upon - however - I have answered the question here a couple dozen
times. Sometimes the end user has to perform the entire KB article you are
actually referencing without doing so.

stosti expressed precisely :
Windows updates

Downloaded the full install exe (316MB)file from
here:http://www.ghacks.net/2008/04/28/official-windows-xp-service-pack-3-download-links/
(still on dialup so it took approx 22 hours to complete) but I'd rather
get it that way then going the update service route and have to disable
my protection while I'm on line for that long period of time and have
something go wrong doing the install process and have my system get all
screwed up.

Closed all running processess as instructed and installed. The install
went flawlessly. I haven't notice any changes since the install. I
then went to MS Update Service and after the normal scanning process,
there were no updates shown to download, so the install appears to have
been completed successfully - thank goodness :)

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by "once you do the following all is well
again regsvr32 wups2.dll". I'm having the same problem as you did but don't
know what i'm supposed to do WITH those two files... Do I open 'Run' and type
them in?

"regsvr32 wups2.dll" sounds like you are supposed to register the wups2.dll
using the regsvr32 command.

Ignore the title...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

Do all suggested methods.

It will 'walk you through' what you need to do.

Thanx Shenan... I'll start trying them now

Shenan - FYI, as soon as I registered the wups2.dll file, updates began
installing again! thanx for helping me out on this. There's a little spot
in 'Mike Heaven' set aside for ya!
