SP3 Problem

Bob

I notice from the list of messages that several people are having problems
with SP3. I did too, after installing it yesterday. This morning my
desktop HP computer would not boot up. It got to the initial Windows XP
screen and then hung. I was able to boot up in safe mode. I tried a system
restore to a couple of days ago, but no change. So I removed SP3 and
everything works fine again, except I'm being nagged to install SP3 again.
How important is SP3? Should I try installing it again or just forget about
it (and the nagging)?

I would prepare the computer (shut down virus programs etc.) and try a new
install. You'll need SP3 eventually.

Most people have not had problems but there are some that do.
There is a well known issue with some HP computers. I have
included if on this at the bottom of the post.

Here are some things in general that you should be aware of:

If I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the
file and not use Automatic Updates.
(See section below titled: Where to download the SP3 installation file)

Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not
install on XP Gold.

I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior
to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems.
Don't have any Image Backup software:
Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available)

If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to
the most recent version.

Very helpful post, thanks.

I have a Toshiba laptop (Equium) which keeps refusing the SP3 update. It
goes through all the motions, then at the very end says that the
installation has failed and it is rolling back.

There is plenty of hard disk space and plenty of RAM and I had assumed that
one of Toshiba's power-saving or other programs for the laptop, was
incompatible with SP3 but I may be wrong. I shall work my way through your
helpful suggestions.

I have had the same problem with my husbands computer, although it installed
fine on mine. I did mine a yr ago, but have tried his twice in the last 2
months. I now ignore sp3 update, but would prefer a fix for this as it is a
real hassle to reload all programs after sys restore.
