SP2 Won't Install

Here's my problem. It seems as if everything that could have gone wrong has.
I've tried to install SP2 many times, and it's always cancelled the
installation. I know it's because my registry is messed up.

1) My Windows Installer is corrupted and won't work correctly. I can't
reinstall because I don't have SP2 fully installed, therefore the subinacl
method doesn't work for me.

2) When I try to edit the permissions in the registry, some of the folders
will say "Error while opening key", and I am unable to edit them. Others will
say "Unable to save permission changes" and not let me change them.

How did windows installer get corrupted? What is the history of the system?
Where there problems with it before you applied SP2? There seems to be a
lot of information you're not providing.

There were no problems before I installed SP2. A short time after I attempted
to install SP2 the first time is when windows installer became corrupted.

There were never any major problems before I installed sp2, or tried to at
least. Windows installer became corrupted shortly after I attempted to
install SP2 for the first time.

The two main reasons for failure of an SP2 update are the OS has problems
that weren't resolved, or malware. Here are some links for installing SP2.
You might be better off slipstreaming SP2 into an installation CD and doing
a clean install. Autostreamer makes slipstreaming easy.

Was it clean of malware? Did you uninstall the apps that should be
uninstalled first, like AV and firewall, and any system level utilities such
as Norton products?

I can't tell you why it happened. You're best bet at this point is do a
clean install with an installation CD that has SP2.
