mdac 2.81 sp1 with xp sp2 issues

Not sure if this is the right spot for this question.
I was trying to install some business software and got a Run-time error 429
"Active-X component can't create object".
My support people say it's because i've got mismatched or corrupt mdac
files.

I found and ran the "component checker" which told me I had some mismatched
files.

I then tried to re-install mdac, of course I got the error about it's
incompatability with XP sp2.

I found a couple of places where it gave instructions on installing mdac 2.8
sp1 back onto XPsp2 but now I'm getting this error msg:

Error Executing Action
INSTALLDRVRMGR: Unable to install driver manager with error code -2147467259

When I followed the 'reinstall' instructions it appeared the install went
OK, the install boxes went away, my screen would blink like it refreshed
then the error msg would pop up.

Now when I run the component checker, I have just one mismatched file but I
have several missing "registry" components which weren't missing before.

One other suggestion mentioned uninstalling SP2, undating mdac then
re-installing sp2. I hope not but...

Any suggestions?

The uninstall sp2 suggestion was because that's how XP gets the mdac 2.8, I
guess it's part of sp2 I'm not sure.

But, your repair suggestions is one of the instruction sites that I followed
and it isn't working.
When I follow each step out, it appears to update at every step but when
done I get the same error message.

That's where I'm lost for what to do next. I haven't found any other
suggestions online so I'm hoping the wizards here have an answer.

Yes, the latest MDAC version for WinXP is installed with SP2 anyway.
Therefore, step 2 of that suggestion (updating MDAC between uninstalling
and reinstalling SP2) doesn't make any sense. Skipping that step doesn't
work either (step 1 fails) if SP2 was installed from the very first
beginning. Even if SP2 was installed by the separate update, the problem
may persist if there was a MDAC mismatch already under WinXP RTM or WinXP
SP1.
But, your repair suggestions is one of the instruction sites that I

So why didn't you perform the additionally suggested repair install.
"How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us

Note that all available system updates have to be reinstalled afterwards.
Do not install any other MDAC updates unless offered at the Microsoft
Update site.

"Another option is always the repair install in this case."

Sorry, I missed that part as being an 'additional' step to try. I was
thinking it referred to the step above it.

Thanks, I'll read that over and try that.

No problem. I should have referred to that MSKB article KB315341 in the
first reply to make clear that I was talking about the *Windows* repair
install as another option - sorry, my bad.
Thanks, I'll read that over and try that.

Okay, good luck.
