HELP! SP2 Won't Install (Continued)

This post is the continuation of another thread titled "HELP! Service Pack 2
won't Install". That thread has 40+ posts in it and its becoming a mess. I
also am have not received any responses in that thread for hours, so I'm
starting this new thread.

I want to start by asking if there is some support phone number for MS where
I can talk to an actual person because I've made about 15 attempts to install
SP2 (all day Sunday, all last night and this evening) and the problem is not
going away.

Each time I install I get an "access denied" error and I keep changing the
permissions for certain registry keys, but they keep coming up as errors.
The last 2nd to the last time I tried, the follwoing 4 registry keys were
found when I searched "setupapi.log" for Error 5s:
HKCR\.AudioCD
HKCR\.DVD
HKCR\vnd.ms.radio
HKCR\.Folder

I went into regedit and gave each of these keys permissions for "Full
Control" and "Read" for the SYSTEM and Administrator account. I also went
into the "Advanced" button and Selected "Replace permissions entries on all
child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects." (although
it would not accept this change on one of the keys).

After that, I tried installing again and got "access denied" again. All of
those same four keys showed up as errors. I feel like I'm going in circles.

Here is an example of one of the errors in its entirety in case that helps:
#-007 Deleting registry key HKCR\.DVD
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.
#E065 Parsing DelReg section [Product.Del.Reg] in
"c:\d2df03831901f6408d0183\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is
denied.
#E064 Parsing install section [ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install]
in "c:\d2df03831901f6408d0183\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access
is denied.

I've had my new ipod for a week and I can't use it until I get SP2
installed. I'm getting very frustrated. Please help.

Just an idea but do you have the option to uninstall SP1? If so, this may
be the easy way out of this. Unless you have Norton installed. If thats
the case, all bets are off.

Most probably you don't need SP2 because all new boxed packages and OEM
installed OSs are all SP2.

It you still think you need SP2 then try a clean install of OS and then
straight go to SP2 (skip SP1 as you will not need it; SP2 has everything
you need).

You need to backup your personal data first.

It looks like your system has become completely unstable and therefore a
clean install, after formatting the HD, will solve all your problems.

Update:

Before my last install attempt, two of the four keys I mentioned already had
the permissions checked, the other two (HKCR\.AudioCD and
HKCR\vnd.ms.radio) were not checked, so I checked them before I installed.

Then I tried the install again (as described in my last post) and as I said,
it failed and these four keys were the "errors". After exiting the install
and rebooting, I looked in the registry and the same two keys (HKCR\.AudioCD
and HKCR\vnd.ms.radio) are unckeded again...and the other two are still
checked. What exactly should I do to these four keys before I install again?
Should I check the ones that are unchecked (even though I've checked them
before)...should I uncheck the ones that are checked? It doesn't seem to
matter, some or all of these four keys just keep showing up as an error.

I don't know if I can uninstall SP1. How can I tell? What will happen if I
do?

And yes, I do have Norton Antivirus on my computer. What does that mean for
my situation?

Because the readers of these newsgroups are scattered all over the

What do you mean "all new boxed packages and OEM installed OSs are all
SP2."? My computer is three years old and has SP1. Why wouldn't I need SP2?

It wasn't clear from your original message whether you had a new system
or not. I was simply saying that high streets are only selling SP2
versions of Windows and so I assumed you have either recently upgraded
to XP or that you bought a new system and tried to install a SP2
upgrade.

However, as you need need SP2, I ca only suggest that you should do a
clean install of OS as the system seems to have been messed up by
constantly installing SP2

Is windows upgrade doing anything for you? How are you installing this
SP2 - is a complete download or simply a windows upgrade/update?

Well before you go to a complete re-install you may wish to try to
uninstall norton from the system as clean as possible. First, you will want
to disconnect the system from the internet and use your "Add Remove
Programs" tool remove Norton.
If it will completely uninstall with out errors, you are a lucky one.
Then uninstall SP1 using the same tool. If it is listed in the Add Remove
Programs menu just click on remove and it will tell you if this is
possible.
Now if you still have a functioning system, execute the SP2 file and let it
install.
If it goes in you are in luck and can then install an AV program. If Norton
is all you have then use it.

If you got failures all the way then I suggest as the others, go ahead and
try a Repair Install from you XP disk and start over with updates.

I concur with Kawosa. The only time out of hundreds of SP2 installs where I
had a problem it was due to Norton Internet Security. Once it was completely
uninstalled per the instructions at Symantec's web site SP2 installed with
no problems. Note. How you uninstall NIS is different with different
versions. Generally you use Add/Remove Programs to remove all Symantec
products eg. LiveReg, LiveUpdate etc. Then run the appropriate version of
RNIS which you can download from Symantec. There will still be some leftover
files and registry entries but in my case they didn't cause a problem. After
that experience I routinely uninstall NIS or NAV before trying to install
SP2.
