Inspiron 8200 XP Pro 2002, with all the latest windows updates except SP2.

I downloaded SP2 from MSDN subscriber site, installation failed twice. Then
I downloaded SP2 from "Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package
for IT Professionals and Developers" (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) ,again
installation failed.

I window restored to the point before SP2 installation, so far machine runs
fine.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Most of us are recommending that those with laptops, especially older ones,
contact the manufacturer for info on upgrading to SP2. I would not upgrade
until I got an "all clear" from Compaq and links to any Compaq-specific
drivers which SP2 would require.

Similarly, we've always discouraged laptop owners from formatting and
installing a retail version of Windows until they have the necessary,
laptop-specific files and drivers on hand which will be needed.

Thanks, but ... It's a DELL machine... I see your ideas though, guess it's
time to rest.

Inspiron is Dell. But I am glad to have this advice.

Sorry, earlier I had replied to a similar post from someone using a Compaq
and neglected to edit the reply to you after copy/pasting.

Do as I say, not as I do: FWIW I tested several betas on my Inspiron 600m
without problem. Likewise I installed the final release without problem.
YMMV.

Were you running it from an account with Administrator status? It looks
like not. If in doubt, boot hitting CTL-ALT-DEL twice at Welcome to get
the old style logon page and logon explicitly under the name
Administrator
