Windows Update is HORRIBLE for updating drivers.

NEVER use it... If it says a new driver is available, go to the
manufacturers site and get it.

that's right... hit-n-run with an uninformed opinion and not bother to
qualify your commentary with actual facts, even anecdotally

i don't suppose you even bothered to follow this discussion thread either,
or read any of the references i provided for your enlightenment

yawn...

Nope... Just got here and since folks don't know how to quote then it's not
my problem.

....and it's always better to get the drivers from the manufacturers website.
Windows update is always at least one or two versions older than what is
current. It even tries to downgrade your drivers. If you have the latest
from the manufacturer, WU will still occasionally say that it has a newer
driver than what is installed, yet it will be older than what's installed.

in most circumstances, yes

Typical Frechman (no I'm not American)

NOT false. Happened with my SBLive drivers AND ATI video drivers as well as
various network card drivers.

Okay, since the original post is long gone...I'll have to just go on what
has been posted...

When device drivers are posted on WU, they are not meant to replace the
manufacturers drivers.

When drivers are posted, they are posted for the benefit of enterprise
installations on machines where the installation of third party is not
allowed. Picture a company that needs to have all of it's computers
(servers, workstations, etc) using the same installed base of drivers for
the purpose of uniformity and maintenance. The drivers posted on WU are
written to provide baseline functionality of the hardware they are written
for. These drivers are meant for an IT department to incorporate into their
infrastructure so that all machines are using a common driver base, and that
they all have the same functionality. They are not meant to take the place
of manufacturers drivers.

If you are on a consumer computer, you should NEVER use device drivers
posted on WU. you should ALWAYS use drivers supplied by the hardware
manufacturer.

Despite what others have posted, there are significant differences between
the drivers posted on WU and the "same" drivers posted at the manufacturers
website.

If the posters who posted otherwise really had a clue, they would have
immediately noticed that the drivers are different.

bobby,

i don't know where you're getting your information, but most of it is simply
not true, please refer to the references i posted for the *facts* about WU,
not folklore and conjecture. i don't know where some of you are getting
these urban legends about WU, but they are all patently false.

Francis;

I am not in the habit of posting folklore.

The facts that I posted are true. The drivers are not meant to take the
place of the drivers supplied by the manufacturers. Never have, never will.
The drivers posted to WU are substantially different in the vast majority of
cases. Printer drivers, scanner drivers, video drivers, etc. are only
offered with base functionality on WU. They do not offer the advanced
features that the drivers offered by the manufacturer. I challenge you,
Francis, to prove otherwise. I am confident that you cannot find a single
device driver on WU that is congruent with the "same" driver offered by the
manufacturer. To try to tell those less knowledgeable that it is okay to
install device drives from WU is nothing short of irresponsible.

i already have... go back through this discussion thread and read my

Jupiter Jones [MVP]

If Windows Update shows a driver for a Critical Update, go to the
hardware manufacturers website and get the latest driver from the
manufacturer, NOT Windows Update.
If Windows Update shows a driver in Driver Updates, again go to the
hardware manufacturers website.
Research the latest driver and determine if the changes will benefit
your computer and install ONLY if you foresee a benefit.

The fact is it is not uncommon to have older drivers at Windows
Update.
Since the manufacturers can immediately post their drivers to their
own site with virtually no outside testing, almost always if not
always the newest driver is available from the manufacturer before
Windows Update.

It has also happened that older drivers have been installed from
Windows Update replacing the superior current driver previously
installed from the manufacturer.

It is best to use Windows Update as information ONLY about a driver
and get the driver directly from the manufacturer to prevent problems.

If you were really interested in this specific issue, you would have
posted this to the Windows Update newsgroup where this subject comes
up often instead of this less than appropriate newsgroup.

Your links do nothing to prove Windows Update is better than the
manufacturer.

huh? i didn't state that they were better, i stated that WU drivers are
perfectly safe to use, and have been regression tested and certified in
microsoft's windows hardware quality labs, you couldn't have read the entire
discussion thread.

i invite you to READ what i said, and the links i provided about WHQL and
drivers available via WU

being an MVP does not make you an authority on the matter, and certainly not
an expert

and tell me, Jupiter, is it just YOU or do all MVPs have a superiority
