Hi

When I apply Windows XP SP2, it hangs on installation.
It appears to run ok, backs up files etc, then stops when it tries to backup
the registry.

I have made a copy of 2 log files - setupapi.log & svcpack.log
They are located at:
http://www.the-murdochs.com/xpsp2/setupapi.log
and
http://www.the-murdochs.com/xpsp2/svcpack.log

Any ideas anyone ?
Hi

Most likely a registry access issue.

See the the "Access denied" section here:

Thanks for directing me to that website - after trying a few of these tricks
I managed to get it to install.

If anyone else is having the problem, here are a few observations that I
made on the way.

Turning up the logging by altering the registry key :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\LogLevel
didn't work the way it was supposed to, as SP2 reset this key when the
Install started, so my logs were all pretty much the same as before.

Resetting the security settings per MS 313222
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose
didn't quite fix the problem either, though this may have helped in some
way.

Finally, as described in the webpage:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

If all else fails
You can try to install Service Pack 2 in safe mode.

This actually worked, and gave me the registry key that was locked, in a
pop-up message,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Security\Security

After taking ownership of the file and clicking on retry, SP2 installed the
way it should have.

My install of XP was pretty fresh (less than 2 weeks courtesy of a failed
disk), so I wanted to put this up here in case anybody else was having a
similar problem.

best regards
Chris
