sp2 registry problems during install

Michael Israel

I have tried to install XPsp2 4 times unsucessfully as administrator. I
went through all the xpsp2 check list recommendations and did them all. I
checked out the registry and made sure all permissions were given to
administrator. I still got an access denied error well into the
installation.
I opened this file:
Svcpack.log
It went through step by step everything that occured during the failed
install.
I don't know how to interpret the point of failure. I assume it is a
registry issue. What I want to do is to have some expert look at
Svcpack.log and give me advice as to how to correct this problem. Could
someone reply to me privately.

Hi

You need to look in setupapi.log and not svcpack.log, and you will most
likely need to enable Verbose logging to see what keys have a problem.

More about this under the "Access denied" section here:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2

If you have registry issues in a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<some key>, try the
method I describe in this link to reset permissions
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]
substituting ".AudioCD" with "<some key>".

I looked at everything you suggested and it is too complicated and risky for
me to attempt. I want to know if someone can look at setupapi.log and tell
me what registry changes need to be made and how to make them. I don't feel
comfortable doing this myself. When things get to this level, a computer
pro should handle it.
