Cannot install SP2 without making system unstartable, black screen

G

Dear all,

I have recently had to reinstall Windows XP. I had Windows XP + SP2
installed on the system but because of a loss of motherboard USB function
thought I would try doing an in-place repair of Windows XP.

I tried this in two ways:

1. I have slipstreamed Windows XP + SP2 CD I created and have used with
great success on other computers. However, when I used this, I always ended
up booting to a black unresponsive screen after seeing the 'Windows XP' logo;
moreover, safe mode would not work either.

2. Subsequently, I used my original WIndows XP SP1 OEM CD to help me do an
in-place repair which would allow me to log into Windows + safe mode + allow
downloads of updates. However, every time I try to install SP2 on top of
this, I get an 'SP2 install has encountered an errror and needs to close'
during the 'cleaning up' pahse of the install. Moreover, even though SP2 is
listed as being installed, the system behaves exactly as in situation (1) and
will not boot past the black screen after the Windows XP logo OR into safe
mode.

I have read every Microsoft support article I can find and tried many
things, including cleaning the registry, turning off anti-virus, etc etc, but
none of them seem to work.

I have the contents of the svcpack.log from last attempted SP2 install over
XP SP1; this can be emailed/appended to any poster; I tried to add it in the
text here but it makes the post too long. Perhaps someone else may be able to
shed some light on my problem?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys.

SP2 is already untinstalled.

I have read through all of theose Microsoft SP2 pages, but thanks for the
links.

I have already scanned the system with SpyBot, Ad-Aware, and an online Panda
Virus scan - no major probs found. I already have HijackThis and didn't think
anything looked suspicious, but I will post a log to one of the malware
forums and see how I go.

Dear all,

I have recently had to reinstall Windows XP. I had Windows XP + SP2
installed on the system but because of a loss of motherboard USB
function
thought I would try doing an in-place repair of Windows XP.

I tried this in two ways:

1. I have slipstreamed Windows XP + SP2 CD I created and have used with
great success on other computers. However, when I used this, I always
ended
up booting to a black unresponsive screen after seeing the 'Windows XP'
logo; moreover, safe mode would not work either.

2. Subsequently, I used my original WIndows XP SP1 OEM CD to help me do
an
in-place repair which would allow me to log into Windows + safe mode +
allow
downloads of updates. However, every time I try to install SP2 on top of
this, I get an 'SP2 install has encountered an errror and needs to
close'
during the 'cleaning up' pahse of the install. Moreover, even though SP2
is
listed as being installed, the system behaves exactly as in situation
(1)
and will not boot past the black screen after the Windows XP logo OR
into
safe mode.

I have read every Microsoft support article I can find and tried many
things, including cleaning the registry, turning off anti-virus, etc
etc,
but none of them seem to work.

I have the contents of the svcpack.log from last attempted SP2 install
over
XP SP1; this can be emailed/appended to any poster; I tried to add it in
the
text here but it makes the post too long. Perhaps someone else may be
able
to shed some light on my problem?

Thanks in advance.
