When trying to repair Windows XPsp2 the setup hangs during installing devices.
It means that i see the message "34 minutes " to finish but there it just
stops. No error messages nothing,
Every time i start the system again it will try to resume the setup. Is
there a possibility to override this behaviour and to start from the original
installation?
Greetings

I just found out when it stops.
In the setuplog i get a message that durring applying security setting an
unrecoverable error occured.

Please someone gives me a solution.

After two days running the setup it passed the 34 minutes but now it hangs
again at supplying netwotk settings sice yesterday morning

I assume that you are trying to do a clean install and not a repair
install.

Setup stops responding with 34 minutes remaining -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828267&Product=winxp

Basically this means that some piece of hardware is creating problems.
The solution is to strip the computer down to just the essentials -
video card, no sound card (if not onboard), RAM, one hard drive, one
optical drive, no network card (if not onboard), no peripherals. Then
try the install.

To get out of the installation loop, boot with a utility that can delete
the partitions and format the drive. This can be a Win98 boot disk (if
you have a floppy drive) or Acronis Disk Director, Partition Magic,
etc. Then boot with the XP cd to do your clean install.

If the install fails again on a stripped-down machine, then one or more
of your hardware components is faulty. This can be RAM, hard drive, or
the motherboard.

Dear Malke, i'm taking all this problems because there are some programs and
data installed on this laptop that i don't want to loose. It's a HPnx6110.
I know that there is a file on the computer that causes it ti start the
setup all over again, I just do not know what it is called. That is why i am
seeking help.
Greetings.

It actually doesn't sound like you did a Repair Install, and I hope you
backed up your data because now the computer is in an unknown state.
Even if you really did a Repair Install (install over the existing XP
operating system instead of formatting), it is unlikely that you will
be able to finish the Repair Install and/or have a usable system
afterwards. There is no one file on the computer that causes the setup
to start over again.

Stop what you are doing immediately. It may be possible to recover the
data by using data recovery software on the machine. This requires
having another computer, the data recovery program, and the skill to
use it. Only you know your skill level. My suggestion would be to take
the machine to a professional computer repair shop that does data
recovery; this will not be your local version of BigStoreUSA.

Here are some links to various data recovery programs:

PCInspector File Recovery -

Executive Software “Undelete†-

R-Studio - http://www.r-tt.com/
Ontrack's EasyRecovery - http://www.ontrack.com/software/

If the data can't be recovered with the specialized software available,
then all is still not lost. You can send the drive to a professional
data recovery company like Drive Savers (my preference) or Seagate Data
Recovery. General prices run from $500USD on up. Drive Savers recovered
all the data on a failed laptop drive for one of my clients and it cost
$2,700. He thought it was worth the money; only you know what your data
is worth. I understand that some insurance companies are now covering
data recovery charges under "Loss of Intellectual Property" so check
with yours.

Seagate Data Recovery Services - https://www.seagatedatarecovery.com/

After you get your data (and you can't back up installed programs; you
need to back up the installers), format the drive and do a clean
install of Windows after determining that the hardware is healthy.

Dear Malke, accessing the drive with on another computer is no problem. I've
already took data of this disk and burned it on dvd. In fact there is no
reason why I shouldn't format the drive and make a new installation but it
intrigues me to find a solution for problems like this especially for the
future. You never know when it might happen again. Thank you for your input.

Dear Evert, I'm glad you got your data. Format the drive and start over
after testing your hardware to make sure it is healthy since there is
no point in trying to install an operating system on faulty hardware.

Dear All/Anybody
I am very interested in Mr Everts problem. I also faced the same one.
During a Repair install (NOT clean install) it hangs at 34 minutes
remaining. The same repeats for amy number of reboots. I could
salvage some data since I had a dual boot XPin another partition. But
I am interested in salvaging some system related data structures,
which could not be accessed this way.

What really I want to know like Everet (I think), is a mechanism to
stop the system reentering setup-install loop again on reboot. I
think it must be the presence of some system file in the root or
sytemroot of the corrupted install.

I checked up files ntldr, ntdetect.com, ntoskrnl, hal.dll, all were
correct. I deleted pagefile.sys, but even then i cannot prevent it
entering the setup-install on reboot. Can anybody (expert) throw some
light into this? Has Evert learned anything new ?
Thanks & regards valmiki
