What a waste of space! I've read them all - and many more. Thus - the
reason(s) for my questions.

Generalized sales pitches do NOT answer my specific questions.

What a lazy di¢khead. Image your disk, install the fu¢king
service pack and see what happens.

What a lazy di¢khead.

You can divine all that from a internet NG post from someone you haven't a
clue who they are? How's the view from up there?
Image your disk

I just get a hoot out of people that make errant assumptions and then
comment further as if they are true.

FYI - If you can understant it: These two computers are backed up, copied,
Imaged and important data stored offsite on a VERY routine basis.
install the fu¢king service pack and see what happens.

It is just that - to nearly 20% of those that try it!

If you weren't a lazy di¢khead you would already have
done what I suggested and you wouldn't have had to come
here and importune the group with a list of 20 lazy
di¢khead questions.

1 - Change the View - Layout setting in OE
No

2 - Change any of the OE Tools - Options settings

Adds a new Security one - to not show Pictures in HTML email - these
have proved too often to carry nasty phone home programs underneath
3 - Change any Toolbar Customized settings in OE
4 - Change any Toolbar Customized settings in IE
No

5 - Change any Cookies and/or Custom Level Security settings in IE

No - but it discourages you from using Low security in Internet zone by
making it not available as default. It adds a popup stopper, and a
warning bar that comes up if you try downloading executables - this can
be turned off
6 - Add any items to my Links folder in IE
7 - Add any Items to my Favorites folder in IE
8 - Add any Toolbar items in IE
9 - Change my Home Page in IE
No

10- Enable/Install Windows Messenger and/or MSN messenger and/or Windows
Messenger Service

Note that Messenger Service is unrelated to the other two. If disabled
it is not turned on again

It might reinstall Windows Messenger if you had actually removed it, but
should not change settings to merely not load it. It does nothing about
MSN Messenger
11- Add any items to my start sequence (Startup folder and/or Msconfig Start
Tab items
12- Add any icons to my task and/or system tray(s)
13- Make any changes to my Folder Options - General, View or File Types
settings

No to those
14- Enable the firewall

Yes. There is then an item in Control Panel to adjust its settings, or
to disable it if you want to use another. Indeed some third party ones
like latest Zone Alarm will disable it when they load
15- Add Sample Music and/or Pictures to my folders
No

16- Enable Automatic Updates

It will offer to turn them on; you can say no. There is then another
new Control Panel applet for them
17- Effect my wireless network in any way

For the better. It makes for much slicker setting up and connection to
any new network
18- Effect my Internet connection in any way
19- Have any effect on the way my AV functions

No, but security Center - see below - may comment that the AV is not
saying it is up to date
20- Require constant attention to system checks and notices

Only one is the 'Security Center' which might come in to tell you that
Firewall AV and AutoUpdate are not fully active, You can click its
'Change way . . . advises me' to avoid it

I suggest you take a look at the timeline of the thread! Thank you for your
answers they are informative.

But - Please - don't attempt game of posting out of sequence with remarks
that are only pertinent if you post in sequence. I quite playing that game
back in '97.

Actually, Mr. Anderson-Davis, since Mr. Nichol is in England and you
are, I believe, in the U.S., Mr. Nichol is not playing a game with you.
I know Mr. Nichol is quite capable of defending himself, but in case he
doesn't care to bother with this thread I thought you might like to
know. People who post in this newsgroup are located all over the world.
In addition to the time differences, there are also differences in how
quickly posts propagate to whatever news server the poster uses.

<rises to Alex' defence, too> And some folks here read and reply to posts
whilst working offline.

Thank you very much

**Thank you - I can accept that
**Some past updates have reverted OE back to it's original state including
the requisite two stock email messages.

If that happened to you, you either had your AV and/or OE running during the
install. Don't do that.
**Past updates have reverted to the default vs customized toolbar settings

See above; substitute IE for OE.
**Past updates have reverted to the default vs customized toolbar settings

**What possible justification can there be for this change? The items in
my
Favorites, including my links folder, can't have a thing to do with
security
and it's NON OF MICROSOFT'S BUSINESS what's in them.

MS has always included default entries in Links folder. You may delete
them, as before, or make Links a hidden file —> end of problem
**Past updates have reset this to a Microsoft page - or worse, to an MSN
page

See above reply.
**This one is a 'maybe' then. I have disabled Messenger Service, gone to
great pains to rid my computers of Windows Messenger and, especially, ALL
things related to MSN!

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are two different applications. Windows
Messenger and all of its inherent "hooks" will be reinstalled in SP2. I
didn't partricularly like this either but I lived. said:
**Thanks. I see NO use for this Service. Every single running Service
and
Process uses RAM, at times Cycles, and adds to boot time.
I have all unnecessary Microsoft Services disabled, have no items in my
Startup folder and keep my msconfig Start items to only the 4 that my AV
uses.

Then you may opt out and make another security suite the default. All too
many problems, worldwide, have been caused by other users who do not have
*any* security center.
**Thanks - ARE YOU SURE!! I ask because there have been reports of users
having File Associations changed back to the Microsoft defaults.

Do your own homework.
****PLEASE EXPLAIN** - I have taken great pains to set up and tweak my
wireless network just the way we like it. I'll NOT risk sp2 unless I know
just what/how it effects my wireless.

**Thanks - By "it" do you mean this new Security Center thing? If so -
there is no issue since the Security Center will be disabled. I'll insist
my NAV 2004 Pro function just like it does now.

<eg> Yeah, right.

Neo Anderson

I have no idea if a SP2 install will make some/any of the changes you ask
about. I will offer a list of items that I noticed relative to some of your
Qs.

1 - Apparently MP 10 gets reinstalled anew.
! I had ver 10 already installed and set up. I had to go
through the process
of unchecking all the spyware checkboxes and disassociating file extensions.
The update had NO business making these changes.

! Some other file associations were changes as were some
Open With items.

2 - Added a "Windows Market Place" to my links!
! WHAT A CROCK** Favorites and Links are MY personal
business
and Microsoft has NO business messing with them!

3 - Added icons for OE, IE and MP to my All Programs List and resorted the
list to their liking!
! ! WHAT A CROCK** That list is MY personal business
and Microsoft has NO business messing with them!

4 - Added an additional (extra) Hyper Terminal icon to my Communications
list.
! Why?

5 - Added/reinstalled Windows Messenger. Added the process, from
somewhere, to my startup items. Task Manager shows it at a running process.
! I had that damned thing completely removed and all
mention
of it on my complete system deleted. ** Now I have to chase it all down and
rid it again!

! I see they added the icon back into my list of available
tool bar items. I'm SHOCKED they
didn't force it back onto my Current Buttons list.

6 - Added 7 running processes to my boot up.

7 - Added a full 25 seconds to my boot time!!

8 - Added nearly 25% to my idle RAM usage.

9 - Vastly improved the connection time from this computer - via
wireless - to my router.
! **See # 7 (above)** So the net result is a much longer
time to
connect to the internet once it start a boot.

10 - The exceptions to the Firewall seem to be working because I can share
folders and printers with the firewall enabled.
! Pre SP2 Windows Firewall wouldn't allow this.

11 - Added three items to Control Panel
! Makes it easy to find them.

12 - Apparently (haven't fully tested it yet) did nothing to mess with my
wireless network.
! Internet throughput speed is the same.

I see they didn't fix the issue of XP NOT remembering windows size and
location settings.
I see they didn't fix the issue of having the directory tree bloated with
three and four user's folders when this is a single user system.
! One user - one set of folders. Two users - two sets of folders.
Etc - would have been nice!
