SP 2--anti virus

I have downloaded the latest nw version of sp2 from
Microsoft's site. I understand that there are issues with
norton and and the security control center.

My question is this....when I open the Security Center I
see no settings for anti-virus monitoring. I thought that
even if the anti-virus program was not seeing the
Security Center or vice versa there would be some
indication of this.....I see nothing along these lines.
There is one line item grayed out under the Resources
column....."Change the way security center alerts me"
Why would this be grayed out?

Appreciate any feedback...Thanks

SP2 is still in beta.
You'll find help at one of the SP2 newsgroups.

If you have NAV 2004, when you use Live Update it will apply a patch
that will enable Security Center to see NAV. I don't believe Symantec
supports any earlier versions of NAV with this update. However, that
doesn't mean your antivirus isn't working - only that Security Center
doesn't identify it. Turn off the Security Center Alert for virus
protection and keep track of your definition subscription yourself.

What? Still in beta? Lol..it's been out for days. There are tons of
posts about it in here. The RTM version is available for download from
the MS site as a network install. Express install will be available
next week starting the 16th from Windows Update site.

No, it's not. SP2 for developers and IT professionals has been available
from Microsoft's website since last weekend.

Hi

I would think your computer is joined to a domain.

If the computer is member of a domain, the Security Center is
default disabled, and you will see this entry in the Application
event log (Source: SecurityCenter, Event ID: 1807):

"The Security Center service has been stopped. It was prevented
from running by a software group policy."

For a domain computer, this is normal and by design, the Security
Center is default turned off (and you will get the message mentioned
above in the event log). There is a Group Policy setting available
if you want to turn it on (domain wide or just for your computer
using Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

Security Center
What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)

06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Note: WinXPSP2_Documentation.zip contains all the .doc downloads...

As far as I'm concerned, this anti-virus monitoring of SP2 is
pretty much a silly feature anyway. It's no improvement to be
able to see that virus definitions are out of date by looking in
the Security Center, as opposed to looking at NAV (or whatever
product you use) itself.

I'm running NAV 2003, so I have Virus Protection set to "Not
Monitored" in the Security Center. I can't see that this "lack"
hurts me in any way.

That requires that the AV program you use sends out a message for the
security center to pick up. which Norton has yet to get round to,
unless there has been an update in the past couple of days. It does not
mean that the items are not working; just not talking

Hi

This is not what the OP is having a "problem" with. The OP's "Change
the way security center alerts me" link is grayed out, this means
that the Security Center is totally disabled (caused by a default
group policy setting for domain computers, see my other post in
this thread).
