How do I turn off the dial tone and other sounds my
telephone makes when it's connecting to the net.
 
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab.

Phone and Modem Options
/Modems\
click to highlight your modem
click [Properties]

In the resulting "Properties" dialog box,
/Modem\
In the box titled "Speaker Volume
drag the slider towards "Off"
click [OK]

click [OK]
