Dailing tone

I am trying to connect by telephone to my computer. If I connect the phone
line to the telephone I get a dailing tone alright. If I connect the phone
line to the computer first and then connect the computer to the phone with
another phone cable I do not get a dailing tone.

Dell's Modem Helper software gives the following error Result Code: 70 - No
Dial Tone At Modem . Can anybody help?

The phone has to be between the PC and the wall outlet. In other words, check
the back of the PC, you'll have two (2) phone jacks, one is for the phone
and the other to the wall outlet.
