sound problems

my friend has just got a comp its second hand and he has no sound output Realtek AC'97 is his sound card what could be the cause the sound just isnt leaving the computer hes checked the speakers but cannot get sound

On the 2hand pc was the sound working prior to him getting it and
also do you know if he has the most current drivers installed for it
