Sound Problem.

Trust this is correct forum.

My son has an issue with sound output on his PC. He had a 5.1 surround
sound system connected to his XP based desktop which worked perfectly when
playing CD/DVD based music or music via a media player eg. WMP etc.

Disconnected system for some time having moved back home prior to moving to
new build home. Whilst at home he upgraded to Windows 7.

Having now moved, he's reconnected 5.1 sound system but only gets sound
coming out of Left and Right Rear speakers when playing music via CD/DVD or
WMP etc.. He's confirmed that he has connected everything correctly - I'd
vouch for that as I'd labeled up all connectors prior to packing away. He's
checked via windows 7 control panel sound icon and testing from here he gets
so sound coming out of all speakers. Only difference in configuration seems
to be O/S used. - now windows 7 nee XP

Any help appreciated.

Not knowing what make or model PC he has, the only suggestion I can make is
for him to go to the manufacturer's web site and download any updated
Windows 7 drivers for his model.

If the audio driver for his sound card works to deliver true 5.1 sound to
all speakers it must be in the program he is using to play the music. As he
has changed operating systems is he now using an upgraded program to play
the music and has he configured the program to use surround sound? I would
suspect the later as it may not be set correctly.

I was about to respond with the same comment. Often there will be another
sound control panel than the Control Panel's Sounds icon too. Even if it's
an integrated sound card, still look for Sound Card controls etc in the OS.
It does sound like a setting was missed if it worked on another OS but not
7.

I'd also check on the mfg's web site for that computer for info on the
sound.
Is there another sound card installed? Could be stepping on each other.

Basically, it does not sound like 5.1 is set but rater 4.0 or similar. Or
even a wiring/plug problem at the speakers since it's all been played with.
Is there EVER any sound from the center speaker?

More detail would help a lot.

I concur with above suggesting it's simply your Windows setup has defaulted
to "stereo" front-left speakers. The control for changing this, I've found
in different places depending on sound card. Look for it under Properties of
the sound card in Device manager, check to see if there's something "extra"
for the sound card in the Control Panel (unique icon indicates it's for the
sound card) also in Device Manager check under the "Sounds & ..." option
standard for all recent windows versions. If all that fails, also check see
if there's not some entry in your Start menu also, even if it's just an
added Mixer program or player for that matter might have it. For the PS I'm
on here, it's found under both the Audio-Sound Card's Properties under
"Sounds ..." in Control Panel (XP Pro) and also found as a Setup Button in
the cards specific Mixer program it adds to system. You'll know you've found
it when you see options for Stereo, 4 speaker, 5.1 etc.". In the case of
this pc, the two places I've found where it can be set are different, one
seems it comes from Windows itself where-as the second is obviously the
Sound Card Mixer program. I usually set it and check the other's also set.

The PC in question is not named brand but built from component parts.
Having just moved, he's awaiting phone and internet connection but I'll
verbally relay your responses and see if that will help him initially. I'll
copy and send via email when he's connected to internet.

The answer would probably be No. No doubt all media programs such as WMP,
Real Player, Quicktime will have been updated but doubt whether they would
have been seriously upgraded versions to work with windows 7
