Hello. Ive tried the trouble shooter to no avail. I just got windows
installed on this PC last week. I got speakers for it this past weekend. I
hook them up properly and all and low and behold there is no spound.

I have the realtek ac'97 drivers for windows xp pro and all... Now before u
ask yes the sound worked on this same PC before It went to the shop. The HD
is newly refurbished 80 gig. AMD Athalon 3300+ or something like that. I can
post everything if ya need me to.

Have you tested the new speakers on another machine with known working audio
to see if they are faulty? If they are found not to be faulty, connect known
working speakers from another machine to your machine and see if the machine is
at fault. If the machine is found to be faulty, take it back to the shop and
have them correct it.

Yes, repost with your speaker checklist e.g.
1. Sound card or SoB software installed
1b. Software configured for input and output channels
2. Speakers known working OK (tested elsewhere.)
3. Connected in the correct socket
and so on
and your test results, e.g. when you record from various
sources (microphone, Internet, wire input) are input levels
displayed (with no playback sound)?

Ok to answer a lot of Questions. Yes Speakers were tested elsewhere and they
work fine. The PC was in the shop because I wasnt getting power. I warrantied
out the MB before it went to the shop and still no power. Problem was that
the MB was mounted to close to the towers backing or something like that.
Fixed the whole thing for 60 bux.

the DXDiag said sound was ok however the sound tests proved it wasnt. Ive
decided to buy a soundcard since it seems this sound card built in isnt
working. not the fault of the person who made the repairs. the fault of the
company who sent me a new MoBo. although I do not wish to rewarranty it out
and have to be without a PC for another month getting it redone right and
paying another 60bux.

maybe you need a usb-driver for the on-board card? I've got
such a situation here, even the chip is on-board it's a usb
device. I'm not sure if I can still see your original post.

Since you wrote that DXDiag says sound is OK now you've got
a card did you turn OFF in the BIOS the on-board card. And
if you use a external card, didn't you get a driver cdrom
and some software as well for it?

Don't you have a tool with it, one could set the volume and
input etc. etc. In the OS I'm using the sound-cards were
muted by default...

had the same problem once - on board sound, everything seemed to be
ok, but no sound. (after a driver update).
what worked for me: I unplugged the speakers and plugged them in
again. A popup screen appeared, with the question: what did you just
plug in, rear speakers? Answered yes, tested again and it worked. Give
it a try, who knows?

This worked for me after having the same problem.

Realtek HD Audio Manager

Right click orange Realtek icon on taskbar
Open sound manager
Open Audio I/O
Open analog (looks like a spanner)
Untick "Mute rear panel output when front headphone plugged
in"
Click OK
