Sound Card Problem

I really need help on this. I got a computer from a friend but have no
sound on an onboard Realtek AC'97, I have bought a new Sound Blaster
Live! 24-bit. Both cards give me a "Windows cannot load the device
driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code
39)". I have downloaded the new drivers at Creative for the Live! card.
I have disabled the Realtek. I have fixed registry problems I had. My
friend said the problem started when he lost his recovery disk for the
computer and used a regular Windows XP SP2 which did not have all of
the drivers he needed for many things that were onboard. Does anyone
have any suggestions on what I might try to fix this problem.
Thanks....

My experience with SB Live drivers is that you must get the absolute
correct ones or you'll have no sound. Another thing Creative does that
is a pain is that you must have installed the drivers that came with
the card (from cd) before you can use anything from the website because
the online drivers are usually updates. This makes it a real annoyance
when trying to install an older SB card that you just had lying around.
My guess is that the drivers you d/l'd were updates or just not quite
right.

There are two ways of handling this. The first is that you "trick" the
SB Live card by installing what you know are wrong drivers and then you
can update them with the right drivers. Or have your friend rummage
around to see if he has the SB Live cd in a drawer somewhere.

The second way is that you buy an inexpensive PCI sound card and use it
instead since it will come with drivers and you don't have to mess
around with it. You can get a basic sound card at the store for under
$25-30 usd. I just bought two C-Medias for $14.95 at Geeks.com and they
had other C-Medias (a very basic sound card) for as little as $5
apiece, plus some SB PCI cards for around $29.

I'm the one who bought the SB Live! card because the Realtek wouldn't
work. I have used the CD and used the update. I'm not sure what else I
can do I've went through windows troubleshooting to try to figure out
the problem, with no results. Anymore help or suggestions you could
offer would be great.

Oh, I didn't realize this was a new sound card. I thought it was a used
one your friend gave you. OK, things to check:

1. First make sure your speakers are working. Plugged in correctly? I'm
not saying this to hurt your feelings - I don't know you - but are you
sure you put the speaker connector in the right "hole"?

2. If the speakers look like they are connected correctly and still no
sound, then swap them out for known-working speakers.

3. If after you've tested this way you know it isn't a speaker issue,
then try the sound card in a different PCI slot.

4. In your first post you said you disabled the onboard sound. I assumed
that meant you uninstalled it from within Windows and then went into
the BIOS and disabled it. If you didn't disable the Realtek in the
BIOS, you need to do this.

I did uninstall the device and disable in onboard in BIOS. I would try
to use the speakers but the card won't even show up in volume control.
In 'Device Manager' I get the ! within the yellow circle which means a
hardware conflict, I think. Inside the 'Device Status' box I get the
Code 39 I mentioned in the first post. The exact same thing was
happening with the onboard sound, so I bought the new card in hopes I
could avoid messing with it. I'm still trying to search the web for a
fix, but can find noone with this problem. The only thing I find is the
same things that 'Windows Troubleshooting' had me do. Anymore help for
me? Thanks in advance.

Try the card in a different slot, preferably not the PCI slot next to
the AGP slot (assuming you have AGP). Refer to the motherboard manual
for any slots that share IRQ's and don't put a soundcard there.
