My Sound isn't working. I try to restore the System Default Sounds - that didn't work. I tried going to Sound Troubleshooting in the Help and Support, only to find that I don't that option. I just don't understand what happened, and I dont know what else to do. Please help me. Thank you.

Go to 'Sounds' in CONTROL PANEL and check that you have a sound card
installed..

Greetings --

Have you tried reinstalling your sound cards drivers?

My sound device is SoundMAX Digital Audio. However, under my device manager it lists, among others, SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio. Is this one in the same?

Greetings --

I'm afraid I can't offer specifics, as you haven't mentioned what
brand and model of sound card you're using. In general, though, you
should go to the sound card manufacturer's web site to obtain the most
recent WinXP-specific drivers available. The site should also provide
you with the necessary instructions for the installation, as well as
some troubleshooting tips.

When I go my new Dell computer, I couldn't get any sound
out either. I have the "integrated" sound system rather
than a card. I had followed the directions on the big
connection chart for plugging in my speakers line and
nothing seemed wrong. Except the chart pointed to the
wrong hole. When I looked in my User's Guide, it poiinted
to the hole next to the one I had plugged inito. I made
the switch, and voila! I got "You've got mail". A stupid
mistake, but very frustrating.
If this isn't the problem with your setup, go to the place
that you choose the sounds you want for each event (sorry I
can't remember where it is, but start with Sound on the
Control Panel. If you can find that window, they let you
test the sounds. If you get hear a sound from there, then
at least your output is working.

They can't help you, their advice about sound and reinstalling the drivers is not correct and is a waste of your time. This is a known issue in Windows XP, for no reason something in the O/S corrups the audio drivers: Swenum.sys, and Swenum.inf. I tried to update both of these and that would not work either, nor would reinstalling the onboard audio drivers. I finally had to go out and buy a new sound card, now I finally have sound until XP decides to kill that card as well.
