My system sounds have been disabled. Help!

XP (MCE) on a Dell Dimension C521.

I have two accounts on the machine, one called Jack and the other is
Guest.

When I use the Guest account, all the system sounds work perfectly.
By system sounds I mean the little dings and dongs that play when you
start or close Windows or empty the recycle bin, etc.

When I use the Jack account these sounds do not play. If I go to
Settings > ControlPanel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds > then
highlite a particular sound and press the little test button the sound
plays fine. But when I go back into Windows the sounds no longer
function.

I restored the system to an earlier date and the sounds worked again.
But since that restored date I have changed ISPs (from Cox to
BellSouth) and the restore changed all my mail and newsgroup settings
back to Cox. So I undid the restore and now I have BellSouth back,
but the sounds fell silent again.

(I didn't think that SystemRestore would change that kind of thing,
but it did).

I'm not even sure exactly when the sounds quit working; I just
suddenly noticed that they were no longer there. I installed several
Windows critical updates (automatically) in the last few days. That
might have affected the sounds.

Any suggestions on how to get them back? I looked thru the Add
Windows Components options and didn't see anything that looked
promising.

Thanks loads...

Go back into Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel. Select Sounds and
make sure that Windows Default is in the Sound Scheme field.

The Sound Scheme Field contains "Windows Default", but the sounds
still do not play. I have tried every scheme but none play. Within
the Sound and Audio Device Aplet they play great when tested, but back
in Windows they no longer play. :>(

Try reinstalling your Audio Driver.

Thanks for the tip but I don't think the driver is at fault because
when I log on to a different account the sounds play fine. The
problem must be somewhere in the settings for the regular account and
I have no idea how to go about finding the settings. :>(

In case anyone is curious, I never did find the problem even tho I
turned my PC over to a tech from the manufacturer (it is still under
warranty) and he groped around for half an hour reinstalling drivers
and stuff.

I fixed the problem by restoring back to an earlier date. I didn't
want to do that because I had just switched from Cox to BellSouth and
so had to reenter my new address in various places. I used Agent
Ransack to locate instances of the old Cox address so I could change
it over.

Thanks to those who tried to help.

Try checking your wave volume controls. I had something similar happen and
it was the volume was turned down on the wave volume.

I have the same problem. My system sounds are all gone. My music and video
sounds are still working. I don't see any sound schemes under sounds.
