sound and volume problem

For some reason my father (who is 74) thought it would be a good idea to do a
system recovery on his Sony Vaio computer with XP wiping clean the hard
drive. Now, for some reason he can't get any sound out of the thing. Though
Windows media player works, in the Sound and Audio device properties window
in the control panel it says that there is no audio device. My Dad likes to
play his computer bridge games and is missing the sounds of the other
players. Can anyone give me any help?
