sound and cd rom drive

i cannot get any sound at all. It is not the driver nor
the speakers. (i know this because in control panel/sounds
and multimedia the speaker icon does not appear [will
appear if working])
Does any 1 have any suggestions!!!
also can it be to do with the wire/cable connecting the
soundcard to a cdrom drive. If so i have 2 cdrom drives E:
[cd-rw] and F:[dvd], which one.
