Sony DCR-TRV80E

Why is it that Sony's DCR does not work correctly under XP Pro? I installed
the USB software and I installed the patch.

There is an error with moviemaker, it says the video device is currently in
use. Why does MS put error messages and then not talk about them on the MS
site or somewhere?

What a mess.

Hello again Mark or John ???

I assume that you have read what others have said in this newsgroup and
noted the fact there is another web site www.papajohn.org where you might
find help. Have you been there to check out the problem solving section? If
not I suggest you give it a try out, things may be less of a mess if you
do..

As far as what Microsoft does or does not do. It is not their problem is
it. Sony the people who manufacture the device have that responsibility. I
mean, if the engine in your car new failed, you would not phone the petrol
(gas) company to complain would you!!

of course, I'm having a go at Sony. However, the MM2 is not very good is it.
The error is pathetic, and it fails to let you at the device control box.
MM2 is not a very good app is it?

It appears that everyone is using "old" code to get up and running on USB
for these devices. Now look at the excellent install for the D-Link DSC-100.
A $80 buck device and it is much better than a $2000 Sony job.

Hi there,

Well it seems you have all the knowledge you need. I nor anyone else can
help you if you don't like the solution provided by your cameras
manufacturer.

MM2 is a very simple tool, it gains access through device drivers that are
more often than not supplied by the manufacturer of the device. If you are
unhappy with this, well what's the point of blaming movie maker. For myself
I think Movie Maker is a great piece of software, I have had only minor
problems with it and those were fixed by simply reading the manual.

But in your case, I expect the best solution would be to go and buy a piece
of software that will work for you, rather than complain in the way you
have about a give away program that cost you nothing.

Hi John-Mark Smith.

Moviemaker - USB ???
You are trying to capture movies with USB?
You know, DV will transfer about 3.61MB/s ? And there is afaik no camcorder
yet supporting USB 2.0 High-Speed?

=> So, USB 2.0 Full-Speed has only a bandwith of 12 Mbit/s (1.5MB/s) which
is simply to slow => For capturing movies you need IEEE-1394 (aka firewire,
aka i.Link) which has 400Mbit/s (50MB/s) and enough diskspace (about 13GB/h
DV-AVI)...

Cheers,
Hausi

Hi there,

Yes I was being a bit dumb there...never mind, but well done to you all the
same. You might be daft enough to think to yourself, "Well yes, surely the
camera comes with a firewire and card...mine did and it did not cost $2000"
or a less gracious person might think..."Hmm another one that just wants to
argue"

Do you have shares in MS?

There is a need for answers to the error messages, this is as bad as the old
blue screen of death.

Why is the USB not working? I have checked everything and it appears ok.

I agree the Sony is really a poor piece of work. The TRV80E is nothing but
trouble. Any device that does not include a simple go/no-go test tool is not
worth buying today.

My DCR-TRV80E came with a USB cable.
I have purchased a firewire cable.

It works now to the point where I tell it the video format, then on the next
screen I get
"An unknown error has occurred" hahahahha don;t you just love this product?

cheers
Mark
