Something That is Not a Socket? Please Help!

Y

yeah

I'm having a problem with one of my computers. It lost its ability to
go online all of a sudden. It is connected to a router via an RJ45
line, but even when I have it connect directly to the cable modem,
thus having a direct connection to the internet, it still refuses to
connect or go online.

The error message I get when I perform an "ipconfig /renew" is this:
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 3. It has its
media connected.

Which doesn't make sense since the NIC is indeed connected.

Also, when I go, Settings -> Network Connections -> Right click on
Local Area Connection -> Status to bring up the Status window ->
Support tab -> Repair to try to repair the connection, I get this:
Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing Local Area Connection 3: An operation
was attempted on something that is not a socket.

Can someone please help me with this? Is there anyway to restore this
computer's connectivity? I'm pretty sure this is a Windows issue, but
I have no idea how to repair this.

This happens whether the firewall's on or not, whether the computer's
connected directly to the modem or through a router and etc. Same
error messages.

Any input or suggestions at this point would be greatly appreciated.
I'd sure hate to reinstall Windows. Oh, and I'm using Windows XP Pro.
TIA!

If Rich's suggestions don't help, it may be that your network card has
failed. If it is an on-board one, you could purchase a PCI card and
install it.

I doubt that your problem requires Windows to be installed.

You could grab a Linux 'Live' CD from somewhere and see if the NIC works
with that.
