Network Adapter says its working but doesn't connect

J

john zeiss

We have an Acer Aspire One using Windows xp and it is usually connected to
the router wirelessly.

It has recently stopped connecting to the internet, although it indicates in
" Wireless network connection Status" that its Atheros AR5007EG wireless
Network Adapter is working and it is connected. Also that the belkin 54g
router modem is connected.

We are also unable to connect the Acer Aspire to the internet when
connecting it directly to the Belkin router modem via a LAN cable.

The *device manager* on the Acer Aspire does not indicate any problems with
the Network adapter.

Having checked that both the cable and wireless router outlets on the belkin
router modem work O.K., when connected up to another computer; we are at a
loss as to what to do.

Any ideas as to what the next step might be please?

Suggests your problem is with the router modem and/or your internet
connection. Can the "other computer" connect to the internet when
connected to the router modem?

Connect via a LAN cable and open a command prompt on the working and
non-working machines and type ipconfig /all

Post the results here.

What! <shakes head at ludicrous replies> Power cycle your Modem, Router
computer. Likely all will be fine.

Because, for example, ipconfig would show if the host got a [dynamic] IP
address assigned to it from the router's DHCP server, or if the user had
configured that host to use a static IP address (which the router may
not allow if not within an authorized range of IP addresses to prevent
blocking). If the user saw they had a non-routeable APIPA address,
they'd know they weren't getting an IP address from their router's DHCP
server. If they had an APIPA address, they're not getting anywhere off
their own subnet.

Not ludicrous at all, except that you don't understand networking so
merely offer shotgun advice. Hell, you didn't mention in which order
those devices should be powered up after powering down all of them.

Ludicris because why should the OP waste his time doing all that when
he'll most likely need a power cycle anyway. Sheesh, he wouldn't
understand what he was doing anyway while anyone can understand pulling
a plug. Don't forget the KISS rule.

Since the OP stated that another host can connect okay through the
router, just what do you think the power cycling of the router will
accomplish for the problematic host?

Do: run>'cmd', "enter"

At the prompt do 'netstat -an', enter.
Poast results.

John

For what it is worth check your laptop's Firewall.
Try connecting with it off & work from there.

Paul.

Many thanks to all. This novice is still struggling. I unistalled my avg
antivirus and disabled the comodo fire wall with no further success at
connecting to the internet.

I tried to find the 'start in safe mode' as advised to try, but when
starting the screen gives me two options on this Acer Aspire: F2 and F12
neither give a 'safe mode' start option?

I typed in cmd into command prompt and get; "C:/Documents and
Settings/john/_ " , I get this both in the 'non working Acer' (both with Lan
lead plugged into it and not plugged in) and also the working desktop also
connected to the router modem with a Lan lead. I also typed in " ipconfig
/all" in command prompt as advised and get; " Windows cannot find
ipconfig/all ".

Most grateful if you 'whizz kids' can think of anything further. Thanks.

Thanks.
It's interesting that ipconfig can't be found. The fact that "/all" was
included in the response doesn't fill me with joy. That's odd, and suggests
that you don't really get a command prompt when you run CMD.

I entered "fred/all" (no spaces) at the command prompt and it responded with
"'fred' is not recognized as an internal command, operable program or batch
file.". The "/all" is recognised as an argument to the command and is
disregarded in the response. The fact that "/all" appears to be part of the
program name in the error message you get tells me that your computer has
some wondrous nasties that are pretending to be the DOS prompt, not to
mention that my same operating system doesn't say "Windows cannot find..."
at all in response to any errant input at the DOS prompt.

When you fire up the DOS prompt and enter "set", what does it return? It
should return a shitbag of environment variables, including "Path=". Is
c:\windows\system32 listed there somewhere?

Also, does ipconfig.exe exist in the c:\windows\system32 folder?

This is all academic anyway. The non-standard responses that you're getting
very strongly suggest that you're well and truly ****ed right about now.

Please confirm that the errors you've mentioned are actually the errors that
you're getting. Word-for-word, not just the same general meaning.

Nay. You have to press F8 just when the bios bootscreen goes away. Press F8
a few times, and you will get the windows start menu. One of the options
there should be "Safe mode with networking".

There has to be a whitespace before the "/all".
It is essentual that you post the results of this command.

Start tapping F8 a couple times a second when you see the messages
about F2 and F12.

Thanks to all. I got it started in safe mode and it still didn't connect

It was my mistake I left out the 'space' in the command prompt, sorry. Here
are the results first *without* the LAN cable being connected between the
Acer
Aspire and the belkin router modem.

Since I haven't used this spare LAN cable for a long time, nor used a cable
connection from the belkin to any pc, other than my main one I thought I
would just test the cable before plugging it into the Acer and getting the
additional set of command prompt readings.

So I got the old laptop (with widows XP) the family uses and connected it to
the belkin by cable. It did not work. So I did the diagnostic test and it
told me; "Windows detected a problem with the Winsock Provider Catalog on
this computer would you like windows to reset catalogue to default
configuration". Now this laptop was working *wirelessly* perfectly well
earlier today.

I went ahead and requested the 'reset to default' configuration. But still
it will not work using the LAN cable directly from the belkin. Also
unfortunately it will now also *not work wirelessly*. Why do I get the
feeling I'm
falling into a mine shaft !

Doing another diagnostic test when the old family laptop would not connect,
it told me to; "Check firewall setting for HTTP port (80) and HTTPS port
(443) and FTP port (21). Any pointers on how to do this check would also
be welcome. Many Thanks.

Since I haven't used this spare LAN cable for a long time, nor used a
cable
connection from the belkin to any pc, other than my main one I thought I
would just test the cable before plugging it into the Acer and getting
the
additional set of command prompt readings.

So I got the old laptop (with widows XP) the family uses and connected it
to
the belkin by cable. It did not work. So I did the diagnostic test and
it
told me; "Windows detected a problem with the Winsock Provider Catalog
on
this computer would you like windows to reset catalogue to default
configuration". Now this laptop was working *wirelessly* perfectly
well
earlier today.

I went ahead and requested the 'reset to default' configuration. But
still
it will not work using the LAN cable directly from the belkin. Also
unfortunately it will now also *not work wirelessly*. Why do I get the
feeling I'm
falling into a mine shaft !

Doing another diagnostic test when the old family laptop would not
connect, it told me to; "Check firewall setting for HTTP port (80) and
HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21). Any pointers on how to do this
check would also be welcome. Many Thanks.

Thanks. reset the TCP/IP on the Acer Aspire and the resultant log said:
bad value was: REG_MULTI-SZ = PSched . But still no connection is being
made. Guess what really puzzles me is why when connecting the working
laptop by lan cable to the modem it stops connecting to the internet the
same as the Acer, yet still my main PC is working (connected by lan cable)
and so is the desktop upstairs (connected wirelessly) to the belkin router
modem. ??
Check out the MAC filter in the router to be sure its allowed to hook
up, yo.
Wots the MAC addy of the unhookable lappy? Is it in the allowed list?
Rename it and add its new name and MAC to the routers list.

HTH, probably wont though...

Start tapping F8 a couple times a second when you see the messages
about F2 and F12.

Thanks to all. I got it started in safe mode and it still didn't
connect
to the internet.
It was my mistake I left out the 'space' in the command prompt, sorry.
Here
are the results first *without* the LAN cable being connected between
the
Acer
Aspire and the belkin router modem.

I don't think starting in safe mode will fix things.
So **** that. Here's what I'd try:
C:\>winipcfg
Whats that tell you?
Then C:\>netstat -an
Whats that tell you?
If yer getting the same lack of connection systematically remove your
TCP/IP stack from Networking>properties.
I've had to delete all the protocols *and* adaptors, then add them back
in to get things to connect.

HTH...even though it mightn't...

Previous advice was: At the prompt do 'netstat -an', enter. Poast results.

When I do this the 'prompt command' screen flashes on for one second and
then just disappears !
Well thats not good. Methinks yer pwn3d on that lappy.

Upgrade to linux?
