Start tapping F8 a couple times a second when you see the messages
about F2 and F12.

Max

Thanks to all. I got it started in safe mode and it still didn't
connect
to the internet.
It was my mistake I left out the 'space' in the command prompt, sorry.
Here
are the results first *without* the LAN cable being connected between
the
Acer
Aspire and the belkin router modem.

I don't think starting in safe mode will fix things.
So **** that. Here's what I'd try:
C:\>winipcfg
Whats that tell you?
Then C:\>netstat -an
Whats that tell you?
If yer getting the same lack of connection systematically remove your
TCP/IP stack from Networking>properties.
I've had to delete all the protocols *and* adaptors, then add them back
in to get things to connect.

HTH...even though it mightn't...

Since I haven't used this spare LAN cable for a long time, nor used a
cable
connection from the belkin to any pc, other than my main one I thought
I
would just test the cable before plugging it into the Acer and getting
the
additional set of command prompt readings.

So I got the old laptop (with widows XP) the family uses and connected
it to
the belkin by cable. It did not work. So I did the diagnostic test and
it
told me; "Windows detected a problem with the Winsock Provider Catalog
on
this computer would you like windows to reset catalogue to default
configuration". Now this laptop was working *wirelessly* perfectly
well
earlier today.

I went ahead and requested the 'reset to default' configuration. But
still
it will not work using the LAN cable directly from the belkin. Also
unfortunately it will now also *not work wirelessly*. Why do I get the
feeling I'm
falling into a mine shaft !

Doing another diagnostic test when the old family laptop would not
connect, it told me to; "Check firewall setting for HTTP port (80) and
HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21). Any pointers on how to do this
check would also be welcome. Many Thanks.

Thanks. reset the TCP/IP on the Acer Aspire and the resultant log said:
bad value was: REG_MULTI-SZ = PSched . But still no connection is being
made. Guess what really puzzles me is why when connecting the working
laptop by lan cable to the modem it stops connecting to the internet the
same as the Acer, yet still my main PC is working (connected by lan cable)
and so is the desktop upstairs (connected wirelessly) to the belkin router
modem. ??

Previous advice was: At the prompt do 'netstat -an', enter. Poast results.

When I do this the 'prompt command' screen flashes on for one second and
then just disappears !

No connection either. No IP, no lease. Damned. Do the LEDs show some
activity? Is the cable broken? The router probably has a LED as well, for
each wired connection. Follow the cable to the router and have a look.
If you can connect to the routers configuration page, from another computer,
does it tell something? Is MAC protection enabled for the lan? May the
router block/shutdown ethernet interfaces for non-matching MACs (but eh
I "assume" it isn't one of the ciscos with port security :))

I do not see a IP address assigned to the wireless either. Just a one-year
lease. Try "ipconfig /renew" but I think there's more ...
And, damned, get another (non-crossover) cable to the router.

Many thanks to all. This novice is still struggling. I unistalled my avg
antivirus and disabled the comodo fire wall with no further success at
connecting to the internet.

I tried to find the 'start in safe mode' as advised to try, but when
starting the screen gives me two options on this Acer Aspire: F2 and F12
neither give a 'safe mode' start option?

I typed in cmd into command prompt and get; "C:/Documents and
Settings/john/_ " , I get this both in the 'non working Acer' (both with Lan
lead plugged into it and not plugged in) and also the working desktop also
connected to the router modem with a Lan lead. I also typed in " ipconfig
/all" in command prompt as advised and get; " Windows cannot find
ipconfig/all ".

Most grateful if you 'whizz kids' can think of anything further. Thanks.
Type the command correctly it is two words separated by a space
ipconfig /all

Typed in carefully the ipconfig /all into prompt command and got exactly
the same result showing up using the cable connection and the wireless
connection. Before posting this up in this group, I phoned the Belkin
technical support. After upteen changes to the Acer and a few to the
Belkin router modem he told me to take the Acer back to the shop because the
wireless card was faulty. I was having a similar problem of strong
reception of wireless signal but no connectivity with the family laptop the
fujitsu, and he said it was probably the avg antivirus and the comodo
firewall on this computer as well as the other one.

My son phoned Belkin up later and the chap there did a series of other tests
and changes, most of which I lost track off, one though was typing in a well
known web address like google with a 'ping' in front of it, in the prompt
command window.

Then *Salvation*....! He altered the ' Preferred dns and the alternate dns
on the computer and everything works just fine. My son said he remembers a
similar thing happening years ago and the dns was altered then and it
brought back a connection. I thinking now that checking dns should be one
of my first ports of call in future, do you think?

I'm glad I didn't return the Acer to the shop saying the wireless card was
faulty. Just to say, I'm grateful for all the kind help shown in this
newgroup, Very many thanks.

Yeah. Ye got a bum ethernet port on yer laptop mate.
Try linking it to another computer with a crossover cable and see if
you get a result.

At least thats what Magic 8-ball says...

So no wireless (is the radio turned off by accident?)

APIPA only. Appears it received no dhcp address from the router.
XP should show a small exclamation mark and "limited connectivity" reminder.
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 169.254.76.140

It's own IP, so not reaching the router (gateway)....

Debugging should begin at the physical layer:
1. do both the router's and the pc's link leds show connection and activity?
2. (wireless) is there a "radio switch" on the Acer, or a softswitch, turned
off? Maybe the wireless transmitter is kaput ... verify on another access
point.
3. doublecheck the router - could the dhcp server be turned off?
Wireless radio might be off as well, but you say another pc can connect ...
Is some MAC filtering activated and the address has changed/is unknown to
the router?
