Software for Remote PC?

Im going to be working out of state and my wife depends on me to maintain
and keep her XP laptop working.

How can I remote to her laptop to view the desktop and control it as if I
was there? Is there software that can just be installed on each PC and work
point to point without need to subscribe to a service?

I looked at gotomypc.com but that requires subscription to their service and
use of their server I guess. Microsofts XP remote PC I understand will only
work if you are on the same network.

I will be connecting from an out of state ISP to get to her PC on another
ISP.

TeamViewer would be the easiest.

Install the full version on your system(s) and the HOST on her laptop. Take
note of her 9 digit ID and set the password and allow all users to logon.
Should be good to go.

.... And you can use Windows remote desktop through the Internet - if you
setup the firewalls and routers correctly (allowing 3389 and forwarding 3389
APPROPRIATELY) and either use Dynamic DNS services (free) or know your
router's public IP. But Teamviewer is so much easier.

GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, etc - all good and have free versions.

Thank you. Does Team Viewer and others you mention all work strictly
between the two computers or do they have not have a server involved run by
the software company.?

You could just go look at the web pages for each. *grin*

Teamviewer has servers, does not require any account.
VNC (like UltraVNC) does not.
LogMeIn, GoToMyPC, etc all have servers and you need and account.
Remote Desktop (built into Windows XP) has no servers, but you would have to
have a professional series or above of the OS in order to act as a host.
All of the Windows OSes after XP come with the client.

The reasons I recommend Teamviewer to most people (and use it so much) is
that you don't need an account to use it, it is free for non-commercial use,
there is no firewall or router configurations to explain to anyone. You run
the full version and they either have the HOST or the QUICKSUPPORT module
running and you are connected/seeing what they are seeing/controlling their
computer.

Hi - I read your posts yesterday and so tried Team Viewer for myself. I am
using the free version and I have to say it's excellent - and so easy to
use! Can't thank you enough for drawing my attention to it.
