Remote Access: from Mac to PC

Hi,

I have a PC with XP Pro where I do all my work and have all my applications
(including things like QuickBooks, Outlook, contact management, etc.).

I also have a Mac laptop that my wife and myself uses.

I need to use the Mac to access my PC when I'm on the road or when my wife
needs to update QuickBook records stored on my PC.

I have:
--Installed RMC Beta for the Mac
--From my PC, in Windows Firewall>Exceptions, I selected "Remote Desktop:
--From my PC in System Properties>Remote, I selected "Allow users to connect
remotely to this computer"
--Then from my Mac, entered my IP address in the RDC field

The error message I get is:
"The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer"

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

The userid on the XP PRO machine must be an administrator or
be placed in the allowed to connect group. The used ID MUST
have a password. Connection is not permitted if the password is blank.

I don't know what "RMC Beta for the Mac" is? Do you mean this?

If your trying to use the first one make sure its configured like this. Note
this was written for XP but I presume its close to the Mac version of RDP 6.

desktop connection client for Mac 2 Beta. I've looked at the RDP6 XP Client
Setting page but I dont see settings.

I've also looked at the general trouble shooting guide you provided.
Perhaps I have an issue with my IP address and which one to use. Here's what
I did:

--Opened IPCONFIG, and took that IP address
--Downloaded and opened the Port Query Tool
--Ran a query on that IP address with "3389" in "Ports to query"
--Query returned "TCP port 3389 (unknown service): LISTENING"

Secondly:
--Downloaded and opened the whatismyip
--Determined that Public IP address is different than the one above
--Ran a query on that IP address with "3389" in "Ports to query"
--Query returned "TCP port 3389 (unknown service): NOTLISTENING"

I looked into the general instructions, but am confused about what to do
next, such as change the port, which IP address to use. What do recommend?

It sounds like the PC you want to connect to is behind a router? If so you
need to forward TCP port 3389 through the router to the IP of the PC you
want to remotely connect to. You then call the PC from a remote location
with the Mac using the public IP of the router.

If your trying to do this over a local LAN then use the LAN IP of the PC.
Note that if the Mac is on the same LAN as the PC it is generally not valid
to use the public IP of the router.

wirelessly to the internet; the PC is connected to a cable modem.

I'm confused about the next steps.
1. Is there a Mac-centric Newsgroup to contact who might have direct
expereince with this issue?
2. What is the LAN IP--the dynamic IP address?
3. Which IP address do I enter in Remote Desktop Connection client from the
Mac?
4. Do I still use port 3389 or need to change this depending on which IP

You must have a wireless router because the whatismyip.com site reports a
different IP than the ipconfig command. You need to determine exactly how
your network is setup and post back. If you run the whatismyip.com test on
both the laptop and the PC do the reported IP addresses differ or agree?

I suppose its possible your connecting to a neighbors wireless network.

I dont believe I'm connected wirelessly via a neighbors service: using
whatismyip.com, my Windows desktop IP address different than my Mac's laptop.

To go back to your previous post, I dont really understand:
It sounds like the PC you want to connect to is behind a router? If so you
need to forward TCP port 3389 through the router to the IP of the PC you
want to remotely connect to. You then call the PC from a remote location
with the Mac using the public IP of the router.

I've found the DSL modem's IP address, and it is dynamic, and think I know
the port it is running on (2420). Running the Port Query Tool, I can also
tell the modem's IP is in fact "Listening" on port 2420, not on port 3389
(used for remote access).

I believe the idea is to change the modem's port from 2420? Or to change the
remote access port from 3389 to 2420? Then I need to enter the IP
address:[port number] in the Remote Access field from my Mac?

If the http://www.whatismyip.com test reports different IP addresses for the
laptop and desktop then your not connecting to the internet via the same
modem/router/etc. So that probably means that if your connecting to the
internet wirelessly from the laptop your either connecting to a neighbors
wireless network or your connecting via a city wide wireless network of some
type, etc...

Since your desktop is connected to a DSL modem be aware that some DSL modems
are also routers. If that is the case then you need to forward/open TCP Port
3389 through the DSL modem or configure the modem in a bridge mode. If you
enable Remote Desktop on the desktop PC and you go to the
http://www.canyouseeme.org test site does the test pass for port 3389. My
guess is it will not. If that is the case you need to check the users manual
for the modem or contact the ISP or manufacturer for help.

Once you get that sorted out you call the desktop PC from your laptop using
the public IP of the desktop, ie. the IP reported by whatismyip...
