slowing down scrolling speed when highlighting text

When using Word 2000, I am finding difficulty highlighting text for cutting and pasting if I choose to include more than one page. Say I was looking to cut 5 pages of text to the clipboard, as soon as I highlight more than one page, the program scrolls almost instantaneously to the end of the document, making it almost impossible to choose the section I want to cut and paste.

I found nothing on the help menue about this. The question is how do I slow down the scrolling speed when highlighting text to cut and paste?

The problem appears only after I reach the end of the page I am on and go on to the next page. I can control the scroll speed withing the page with the mouse, but once I reach the next page, the highlighting zooms to the end of the document.

I've seen several workarounds for this. My preferred method is to left
mouse click where I want the start of the text selection to be which leaves
the insertion point as a marker. After releasing the left mouse buttion, I
use the mouse wheel to scroll to the approximate area of my end point, hold
down the shift button and left click where I want the end of the text
selection. This captures the entire selection.

The problem I have is that my mouse has no mousewheel so I have no way of selecting text with the mouse other than holding down the left mouse button. I was wondering if there was any solution to this problem (slowing down scrolling speed) in either Word or Windows

There is no specific way to "slow down" the mouse, but by selecting where
you want to start, clicking the right-hand scroll arrow (or bar) and
scrolling down to where you want to end, holding the SHIFT key, then
clicking, you will select everything in between (as mentioned previously).

Another trick if you have several paragraphs you want to select is to
"triple-click" inside your first paragraph, hold down the SHIFT key, then
click on each successive paragraph. Scroll down using the right-hand scroll
arrow, hold the SHIFT key, then click on more paragraphs.

Also, The keyboard method of selecting text is to have the insertion point at the beginning of what you want to select, hold down the Shift key and use any keyboard navigation such as down arrow, right arrow, left arrow, up arrow, End, Page Down, Page Up. I find this extremely useful for selecting more or selecting less.
