slowed down

I hope someone can help me. My computer has slowed down a lot. What
happened is when I am using a program that uses nearly 100% of my CPU power,
and then open up other applications, the computer settings change and it
becomes really slow at start up and during regular use. Before I just did a
system restore and it fixed the problem, but I don't have any checkpoints
that will work. Is there anything I can do? Please help.
