Jim Byrd said:Hi Doug - Not sure if this is your problem, but you might take a
look. You might want to check and see if you've installed Hotfix
Q329170. If so, and unless you're sure you need it, it apparently
causes major slowdowns on shutdown and should be removed. See here
to decide about whether you need this hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=329170. There's been a lot of
discussion about this in microsoft.public.win2000.general nws gp at
various times in the past. If you decide to remove it, go to your
Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs and see if Q329170 is listed as
installed and, if so, remove it. If you decide that you do need to
keep it, an alternative that's been proposed that will allow you to
be able to exit normally even with the hotfix is to run "net stop
spooler" (without the quotes) from a cmd window before shutdown.
You might want to consider adding that to a logout script that stops
the spooler at shutdown, and kept the hotfix in that case. (I've
verified that this works, BTW.)
MS has a fix available if you phone them. See:

plus (Courtesy of Steve Parry)
start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user
profile ... set enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is
60!!
and then (added by me) set waittokillservicetimeout at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
to 5000 ms instead of the default 20000.
(I can verify that these last two make a HUGH difference in shutdown
times.)
One last area to check. Unless you actually use them, it has been
reported that unchecking Enable Offline Files in Folder
Options|Offline Files tab substantially decreases the shutdown time
(presumtively by eliminating the "Synchronize all offline files"
step).

I'veDoug said:I tried all of your proposed solutions. None of them change the
shutdown time.
Let me further describe the situation. My computer (IMB labtop)
shutdown fine before I enabled the domain longon feature to log on to
my school's server. After enabling the domain logon, whether I log
on to the server or log in as the administrator to my laptop only,
the problem persists. The shutdown begins in the normal fashion and
the last dialogue that appears is Saving Settings. That dialogue
then disappears leaving the plain teal screen and for the next 60
seconds the computer stays in that state with the hard drive being
accessed the entire time.
If I disable the domain logon feature, the problem still exists. I
then have to go into ConfigSafe and choose a system configuration
prior to the date of enabling the domain logon feature.
Does this information help any?
Another thing to look at is the application event log. If you are getting:-In
are you using roaming profiles .. and have a large profile possibly?

Doug said:There is nothing in the event log because this happens after the
event log has stopped. In fact, it happens after everything has
stopped.
During shutdown, everything performs normally and quick (getting to
the "windows is shutting down" in 10 seconds) then it hangs for a
minute after everything else has terminated. Just get the blank teal
screen for 60 seconds witht the hard drive being accessed constantly.
I have timed this and it happens after the event log has terminated.

That did it! Shuts down in no time flat. Thanks for all the help.

I've modified my post accoringly. Happy New Year!!
