Slow print & 100% CPU usage

My system is a 2.4GHz Dell running Windows XP.
All Windows XP updates have been installed from the
Microsoft website.

During printing, the Task Monitor shows 99% CPU usage for
the process with Image Name of "System"
Printing is also very slow.
I am printing to an HP Laserjet II on LPT1.

How do I get the system or spooler, or whatever is causing
the problem, to quit hogging the CPU?
How can I speed up printing?

While searching for a WinXP problem of my own, I came
across Knowledge Base Article #318273. This article might
fix your problem, but not mine! :)
